Mets Games Played On This Date: April 19

 


The "Har-vee's be-tter" game, an “Immaculate inning” from Nolan Ryan, and the Mets hit 7 homers in Philly.  These are just a few of the games the Mets have played on April 19th.

National Pastime.com: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Matt Harvey becomes the first pitcher in modern major league history to win his first four games while giving up less than a total of ten hits. The 24 year-old Mets right-hander easily outduels his mound opponent, Washington's former phenom, Stephen Strasburg, prompting the Citi Field crowd to start chanting, "Har-vee's be-tter, "Har-vee's be-tter."

Jonathan Niese pitched 6 innings giving up 2 runs but was outpitched by Wandy Rodriquez who went 7 innings and allowed just a solo HR to Carlos Beltran.  5 Mets relief pitchers allowed the additional 4 runs to score for Houston.

National Pastime.com: David Wright's seventh-inning grand slam at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park establishes a club record for home runs hit in a game. The Mets go deep seven times (Reyes-2, Diaz-2, Piazza, Wright, and Mientkiewicz) when they rout the Phillies, 16-4.

Two first inning runs, 1 earned, off Dwight Gooden is all the Expos and Dennis Martinez needed to beat the Mets.  Vince Coleman singled home Mark Carreon who had a pinch hit double for the Mets only run.

The Mets split a pair of good old fashioned single admission, 9 innings games with the Expos.

In the first game, despite the Mets getting 13 hits including a 2 run HR from Ron Hodges, the Expos’ Ray Burris with relief help from Bill Lee bested Craig Swan.  

In the 2nd game, a 5 run 3rd inning highlighted by Dave Kingman’s 3 run HR helped Pat Zachry beat Charlie Lea.

National Pastime.com: Nolan Ryan makes quick work of the Dodgers when he strikes out the side on nine pitches in the top of the third inning of the Mets' 3-2 loss at Shea Stadium. The 21 year-old New York fireballer, who will also accomplish the feat with the Angels in 1972, strikes out 11 batters in 7.1 frames, including Claude Osteen, Wes Parker, and Zoilo Versalles, the victims of his immaculate inning.

Ryan left the game in the 8th after giving up a one out single with the game tied at 1-1.  Bill Short and Cal Koonce each allowed a run to score but Ryan was tagged with the loss. Ron Swoboda homered to lead off the 9th but the next three Mets batters made out 1-2-3 to end the game.

  2. Hard luck loss by Ryan in 1968. Mets Pitchers have had so many of those over the years.

  3. I remember that 2005 game vs the Phillies. It briefly lead me to believe that the 2005 Mets would be a stronger offensive club than they wound up being
