Pastime.com: Appearing as a pinch hitter at Petco
Park, Julio Franco becomes the oldest major leaguer to hit a home run. The 47
years, 240 days old's eighth-inning blast, which put the Mets ahead in their
7-2 victory over the Padres, surpasses Jack Quinn, who accomplished the feat as
a pitcher for the Philadelphia A's at the age of 46 years, 357 days.
At Petco Park in his first at-bat of the season, Kaz Matsui hits an inside-the-park round-tripper, making it the third successive season in which the Mets second baseman has hit a home run in his initial plate appearance of the year. Ken Griffey Jr. also accomplished the feat starting in 1997 with the Mariners but had walked before going deep.

In that game in 1983, Seaver in career year 17 rolls back the clock with a 3 hit shutout, fanning 9. Amazing.
ReplyDelete3 years later, in the great year of 1986, Sid tossed a 2 hitter. Most of his starts, he was real tough.
Also, in 1963, Al Jackson outpitched Warren Spahn, and I glanced at the 1963 Yankees box score. They lost 7-1. Opposing pitcher threw a complete game and fanned just 1. Yankee pitchers fanned just 3. Nowadays, that's the first inning for Ks.
ReplyDeleteJosh Hejka talked about why there are so many strikeouts in baseball yesterday. Pitchers are throwing better and hitters swinging for the fences. That's the bottom line but Josh explains it much better than that.
ReplyDeleteLoved watching the video of Franco's 402nd save. He finished with 424, and it seems like there were men on base in all of them
ReplyDeleteGosh Mike, it sure did.
