Mets Games Played On This Date: April 30

 


The first Mets win for Steve Trachsel, Tug McGraw with 4 shtout innings to get a win in relief, and a rain shortened win for Dwight Gooden.

Jon Niese threw 6 scoreless innings to hold on to a slim 1-0 lead.  In the 7th after allowing a HR to John Mayberry, a walk and a single, Taylor Buchholz relieved Niese and allowed a sacrifice fly to Placido Polanco. For the go ahead and eventual winning run.  Roy Halladay went the distance for the Phils allowing just the one run on consecutive singles by Daniel Murphy, David Wright, and Carlos Beltran

A big 5 run 6th inning helped Steve Trachsel earn his first ever Mets win.  Steve would go on to an 11-13 record for the Mets that year and end up with 66 career Mets wins.  Mike Piazza’s 3 run homer in the 6th the big blow.

Rick Cerone hit two doubles and went 3 for 3 as part of a 13 hit Mets attack.  Howard Johnson also homered as Dwight Gooden got the win going 6 innings, allowing a 2 run HR by Benito Santiago

3 Met errors did not help Randy Jones – 8 hits, 7 runs – 3 earned in 5.2 innings as the Pirates pounded the Mets the second night in a row.  Mets tried to comeback in the 9th scoring 2 runs on doubles by Doug Flynn and Bob Bailor and brought the tying run to the plate but Grant Jackson struck out Lee Mazzilli to end the game.

Ken Boswells two out single in the 12th scored Bud Harrelson to give the Mets the win.  The Mets led 3-1 but a Joe Morgan 2 run HR off Jim McAndrew tied the game.  Winning pitcher Tug McGraw went 4 scoreless in relief.

It is the most runs in franchise history for Washington. Worse for New York, Noah Syndergaard leaves the game in the 2nd after experiencing arm pain.
