Cubs 4 Mets 4 (10 innings) Box Score/Gameday: Luis Guillorme 3B 0 for 4 with a walk; Francisco Lindor SS 0 for 4 with a walk and a K; Dominic Smith LF 2 for 5, run scored, 1 K;  Pete Alonso 1B 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBIs, run scored, 1 K; Michael Conforto RF 1 for 4, 1 K; James McCann C 1 for 4, 2 Ks; Jonathan Villar 2B 1 for 2, walk, run scored;  Kevin Pillar CF 0 for 4, 2 Ks; Joey Lucchesi P 0 for 1 – 3 innings, 2 hits 3 runs – all earned, 2 walks, 5 Ks; Sean Reid-Foley 3 innings, no hits, no runs, 4 Ks; Trevor May 1 inning, 1 hit, no runs, 1 K; Aaron Loup 2/3 inning 1 hit, no runs, 1 K; Miguel Castro 1/3 inning no its, no runs, 1 K; Edwin Diaz (L, 1-1) 1.1 innings, 2 hits, 1 run – unearned (10th inning runner on 2nd), 1 HBP, 1 walk, 2 Ks;

SNY.TV: Joey Lucchesi looked strong out of the gates, retiring the first six Cubs he faced including four punchouts. After striking out David Bote to start the third, Lucchesi lost some command, walking Jake Marisnick and pitcher Trevor Williams. With two outs in the inning, Willson Contreras singled on a ball that came back and hit Lucchesi and careened away to score the first run of the game. Kris Bryant then came up with a big hit, a two-run double to left-center to make it a 3-0 game…’

Tim Healey Newsday: “Sean Reid-Foley kept the Mets within one run of the Cubs with an outstanding Mets debut. The right-hander pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts out of the bullpen on the same day he was called up from the team’s alternate site in Brooklyn.”

Mike Puma NY Post: “Alonso’s second homer in as many nights sliced the Mets’ deficit to 3-2 in the fourth. After Smith doubled leading off the inning, Alonso blasted a 413-foot shot to left field for his team-leading fourth homer.”

Metstradamus: J.D. Davis came on to pinch hit for Reid-Foley in the 7th after getting a day off, possibly, to clear his head. He crushed an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3, and now you really felt this was ours, and that everything would be okay.

Ken Daviodoff NY Post: “After tying this game…the Mets couldn’t plate any more runs, emblematic of their young season. Not even when their placed base-runner Kevin Pillar advanced to third base with no outs in the 10th, pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil chasing several pitches out of the zone to strike out, nor when they loaded the bases with one out, Dominic Smith grounding into a double play.”

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: ”After Edwin Díaz pitched a scoreless ninth to send the game to extras, the Mets had little choice but to entrust him with the 10th as well...he has historically been less effective with men on base in his career…Opposing hitters vs. Díaz: …with the bases empty: .188/.274/.324…with men on base: .223/.300/.366…with a man on second and no outs: .313/.353/.375”

Justin Heyward singled in the Cubs winning run after the bases were loaded.

Tonight's Game:

Nationals (7-9) @ Mets (7-7), 7:10 pm

NYM: Jacob deGrom (#48, 33, RHP, 1-1, 0.45)
WSN: Erick Fedde (#23, 28, RHP, 1-1, 5.56)

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: “Brandon Nimmo had a stiff right hip. J.D. Davis, who has hit well but made three errors in the previous two games, sat in favor of Luis Guillorme. And Jeff McNeil, hitting .163 with a .529 OPS, was replaced by Jonathan Villar.”

Any Martino SNY.TV: Pete Alonso’s comments show Mets are on track with an important goal: 'That bridge is more connected.' 'I feel like it’s easier now because there’s tangible data.'  Pete Alonso: “Just because we have data doesn’t mean it’s worth anything…To get to point A to point B there needs to be a bridge. From the analytical and numbers side to the player side, there needs to be a bridge…I feel that it’s a nice improvement from years past.”

NY Post: Mets’ Pete Alonso ‘all in’ on defending Home Run Derby title. “If I get invited I would love to do it,” Alonso said. “I would love to defend my title.”

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: 5 NL East players who can turn it around.  For the Mets Francisco Lindor – “He has had a tough time making hard contact early in his Mets tenure…The most significant thing working in Lindor’s favor is his strike zone judgment…The shortstop entered Wednesday’s play ranked 13th in the Majors in walk rate and third in strikeout rate…”

Brian Joura Mets360: Robert Gsellman and the Mets’ lousy pen. “After flirting with respectability earlier in the season, the Mets bullpen finds itself back in familiar territory. They are tied for 13th in OPS allowed (.767), 14th in WHIP (1.587) and last in ERA (5.45) and it took just 34.2 IP for the unit to achieve this level.”

In the team's tenth attempt, the Mets win their first game in franchise history, defeating the Pirates at Forbes Field, 9-1. Jay Hook's five-hit complete-game victory snaps Pittsburgh's record-tying winning streak of 10 games from the start of the season without a loss.

2006

Keith Hernandez is reprimanded by Sportsnet New York, the Mets' television network, for comments made last night about the female in full uniform sitting in the Padres dugout. Spotting Kelly Calabrese, the Padres' full-time massage therapist, the Mets broadcaster remarked women "don't belong in the dugout" and apologized for his insensitive comments during the telecast.

Baseball Reference:

2010: The Mets beat the Braves, 5 - 2, as Ike Davis hits his first major league home run. There is an unusual play in the 7th inning: with the Mets leading 3 - 2 with two runners on base, Jose Reyes hits a high pop-up and the umpires invoke the infield fly rule. But 3B Chipper Jones crosses in front of SS Omar Infante in the windy conditions, and the ball glances off his glove and falls to the ground. C Brian McCann picks up the ball, and not realizing that Reyes is out automatically, goes after him. He relays the ball to 1B Eric Hinske, who tags both Reyes and the bag to no avail. While the Braves are busy flogging a dead horse, Angel Pagan races around the diamond for the Mets' fourth run. Nippon Pro Baseball veteran Hisanori Takahashi replaces starter John Maine, who has to leave in the 4th inning with pain in his left elbow; he strikes out seven in three innings to pick up his first major league win.

2015: The Mets tie a team record with their 11th straight win, 6 - 3 over the Braves. Daniel Murphy drives in 4 runs as Bartolo Colon is the winner over Julio Teheran.

2019 - Zack Wheeler has a career night for the Mets against the Phillies, as he gives up no runs on 5 hits in 7 innings while striking out 11, and also contributes at the plate with a double and his first career homer. New York wins handily, 9 - 0.

  1. Tough, tough loss. Simply, guys need to stop (not) hitting like Pillar.

    Reid Foley was impressive.

At times like this, I wish there were some minor league wins to take the edge off.

I once thought birthday boy Henry Owen would be a great reliever...that one year in AA when he fanned 74 in 40 innings, 1.58 ERA, 20 of 22 saves. Then his arm blew.

  2. Tom. I thought Owens was going to be great as well. Unfortunately, just another prospect that blew out his arm. He was traded for Jason Vargas -the original tour.

  3. Two things from last night’s game:
    1. Bases loaded, one out. Dom Smith hits it on the screws, hits into a double play. Same situation, Jason Heyward hits it on the screws, but it’s between second and first, base hit. The trip to Chicago in a nutshell.

    2. Alonso is annoying. People may think his candor is welcome or cute, but it’s getting tiring to hear his unending foul mouth. He acts like a jock of yesteryear, but we aren’t in yesteryear any longer.

  4. Now tied for first. After today, if things don't go their way, could be tied for last.
