Mack - Even More Draft Notes

5-18-21 - reviewing the brew -

(15) Adrian Del Castillo, C, Miami

A catching prospect with a big bat but questionable defensive skills? Sign Milwaukee up! Del Castillo has shown the ability to hit for a high average in college, and was in early consideration for a top 5 selection in this draft, even getting some nods for the 1st overall pick.

But that has slowed down and he’s dropped down a bit due to his power not showing up so far this season and Baseball Prospect Journal has Del Castillo falling to 15th overall in their Mock Draft 3.0.

The Brewers have loved this kind of profile before. Omar Narvaez was a great hitter, but poor defender. They brought him in and turned around his defense, and now his offense is improving. Mario Feliciano, Thomas Dillard, and Zavier Warren were all seen as offense-first catchers with improvement needed defensively. The Brewers believe in their catching development and have invested heavily.

They’re likely to invest again if an opportunity to add Del Castillo presents itself.

Mack’s spin -

Del Castillo has slipped on most boards, including mine.

I have him as my 3rd catcher now, behind Henry Davis and Mat Nelson.

(33) Christian Franklin, OF, Arkansas

Baseball Prospect Journal has a slightly expanded mock draft, which included Competitive Balance Round A, of which the Brewers have a pick, the 33rd overall pick in the draft. With this pick, they have the Brewers taking another college bat in the form of Arkansas outfielder Christian Franklin.

Franklin is a gifted defender in the outfield and has a coveted power/speed combination on offense. The question will be whether he hits enough to make use of that power and speed, but he’d be good value at 33 overall.

Mack’s spin -

I only have Franklin as my 10th outfielder.

5-18-21 - reviewing the brew -

Benny Montgomery, OF, Red Land HS (PA)

Baseball America has the Brewers taking a prep outfielder in their most recent update. Benny Montgomery also has a power/speed combination with questions about whether he’ll hit enough to make use of his power and speed.

As a high school hitter with concerns about his hit tool, Montgomery will likely take some time to develop. With the Brewers likely hoping for their farm system to produce some big league help quickly, Montgomery won’t be the best choice if that’s their desire. If the bat comes together, Montgomery could be a 5-tool player, however.

Mack’s spin -

I currently have Benny as my 9th outfielder.

5-18-21 - reviewing the brew -

Kahlil Watson, SS, Wake Forest HS (NC)

This is a great draft class for high school shortstops. There could be as many as four or five prep shortstops taken in the first round this year, and Watson has some of the best speed of any of them. The others are seen as better overall hitters, which is why Watson is likely to fall into the middle of the first round in MLB Pipeline’s latest mock.

Mack’s spin -

I currently have Wilson as my 5th shortstop.

5-18-21 - fish stripes -

The Miami Marlins went all pitchers in the 2020 MLB Draft, so it would not be surprising if they prioritized the top available hitters this year when it’s their turn to pick. Dexter Southfield’s Joshua Baez makes sense on paper.

Mack’s spin -

Currently, I have Baez as my 8th outfielder on my board.

5-18-21 - Keanan Lamb @keananlamb

A pure work-horse, Gators RHP Tommy Mace exudes everything you'd expect in a power pitcher. All of his pitches are firm, getting max extension downhill and pounding the strike zone

5-18-21 - Perfect Game Georgia @PG_Georgia

Dan Oberst (‘21 eligible) hits his 17th HR of the year for UWG baseball. He’s having a monster season currently posting a line of .409/.485/.848. Potential D2 player of the year with solid raw power.

Mack’s spin -

This is late ink on this D2 first baseman.

Only 23 strikeouts in 164 at-bats.

Hmm…

5-16-21 - Ian Smith @FlaSmitty

Texas Tech SS Cal Conley has launched a pair of HRs this weekend, including this grand salami yesterday in a big win.

That’s now 11 on the year, while slashing .339/.404/.594 with an above average glove. In a down year for college bats, Conley is making his name loud.

Mack’s spin -

A new name that isn’t on my charts.

Will keep a lookout for more ink.

5-16-21 - wcvb

A 17-year-old high school baseball player in Massachusetts is drawing dozens of Major League Baseball scouts to his games.

Josh Baez, a senior at the Dexter Southfield School in Brookline, will likely be selected in the first or second round of the 2021 MLB draft in July.

Baez is 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs 235 pounds; can run 60 yards in 6.3 seconds and throws 98 miles per hour from the mound.

Mack’s spin -

I don’t have Baez as a pitcher.

I rank him as the 8th outfielder in this draft.

5-15-21 - Kendall Rogers  @KendallRogers

Strong return to the bump for Vanderbilt’s RHP Jack Leiter. 10ks in five innings against Ole Miss.

Mack’s spin -

The whole baseball world was waiting for this outing.

This puts him back in the running for the 1.1 pick in July.

5-15-21 - WIS TV -

Dutch Fork senior outfielder Will Taylor has a bright, athletic future. He’s currently a first-round Major League Baseball draft prospect.

“That would be something special,” Taylor said about potentially being selected in the first round of the MLB draft. “It’s been a childhood dream of mine. We’ll see where it takes us in the end. That’s the ultimate goal in the end. Whether it’s out of high school or college.”

Taylor is a multi-sport athlete who signed with Clemson to play baseball and football. In late June, he intends to move up to Tiger Town a few weeks ahead of the MLB draft. Whether he ever wears the Orange and Purple in a game remains up in the air.

Mack’s spin -

Moving to the campus of one the nation’s top football programs speaks volumes.

Not sure this kid is going baseball in July.
