Mack - More Weekly Draft Notes

5-26-21 - Jim Callis @jimcallisMLB

off top of head, listing in alpha order:

1st Tier: Davis, Jobe, House, Lawlar, Leiter, Mayer, Rocker, Watson

2nd Tier: Bachman, Cowser, Ford, Frelick, Madden, McLain, B.Montgomery, Stovall, Taylor, Wicks

Can be talked into adding/subtracting from 2nd tier, may be high on Stovall

Gunnar Hoglund still will go in the 1st rd. I see Jaden Hill as more of a sandwich/2nd rd type. Those are the two big injuries.

I'm just hearing mostly bats for the Mets at 10 now. Though I think if one of the top 8 guys fell, they'd certainly be in play.

Jordan Wicks is clearly the best LHP in the @MLBDraft. Wouldn't be surprised to see one of these five college LHPs sneak into the 1st rd behind him.

5-26-21 - Teddy Cahill  - @tedcahill

Jackson Wolf throws a five-hit CG to lead WVU Baseball to a 5-1 win against Texas in the Big 12 Tournament.

He was really fired up after the last out. Impressive night for him.

Keithlaw @keithlaw

Wolf finished with 138 pitches, more than any MLB pitcher has thrown in any single game since 2013 (Lincecum's no-hitter) - and, again, West Virginia did this to Wolf on short rest.

OF Jud Fabian -

Deviation from that mark indicates that a player may have been playing above or below his true talent level. Fabian’s batting average on balls in play during the 2021 season was .284, which suggests he completely earned his impressive slash line.

It wasn’t all sunshine for the Orange and Blue slugger during the 2021 season. He carried a strikeout rate north of 30% through most of the season and saw his national perception as a draft prospect nosedive as a result. There’s virtually no track record of success in the pros for players with that kind of swing and miss at the college level.

Mack’s spin -

Other outfielders keep creeping past Fabian on my draft board.

Current;y he is my 6th outfielder, which is disappointing since he started this mock season as my 1st.

5-26-21 - BA

RHP Bubba Chandler

The laundry list of sports that Bubba Chandler excels at is lengthy.

Whether he’s on the diamond, the gridiron, the field, the court, the green—the consensus is that he will excel.

Committed to Clemson to play both baseball and football, Chandler is a two-way draft prospect with high upside on the mound who transforms into a switch-hitting shortstop anytime he’s not on the hill. Minor football injuries brought the quarterback’s high school basketball career to a premature end before his junior year. But he can still dunk, and there’s little doubt that he could stretch the imagination in any sporting venue.

Mack’s spin -

I’m a big Clemson football fan, so you know where I hope he goes.

Still, he is currently my 7th RHP.

2B Max Ferguson

Max Ferguson established himself at the top of the Tennessee baseball lineup as a sophomore in 2020. He hasn't slowed down as a junior, putting together a solid season in 2021.

Ferguson provided one of the top highlights of Tennessee's season.

The junior slugged a three-run walk-off homer against Arkansas on May 15, lifting Tennessee to an 8-7 win against the No. 1 Razorbacks.

Mack’s spin -

Ferguson has fallen to my 2nd second baseman behind Peyton Stovall.

5-26-21 - trueblueLA -

RHP Ben Kudrna

Kiley McDaniel at ESPN unveiled a mock draft two weeks ago, and has the Dodgers taking high school right-hander Ben Kudrna out of Kansas with the 29th overall pick in the first round.

“Kudrna fits in the Dodgers mold of power arms, and they’ve been tied mostly to prep players, which makes sense given their top-tier development,” wrote McDaniel, who also noted two-way players Spencer Schwellenbach and Carson Williams as potential Dodgers fits.

Keith Law at The Athletic rated Kudrna the 44th-best draft prospect this year, noting, “Kudrna is a projection right-hander with a good delivery and enough present stuff, including the makings of a good slider and potentially plus change-up.”

Mack’s spin -

My 36th RHP.

5-25-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB)

Alex Binelas has three homers today (18) and Henry Davis has two homer today (14).

For Davis, he's got 14 homers and 10 stolen bases this season.

Would be interested to learn the last catcher-primary to go 15/10 in a single season if anyone has that sort of big data

Mack’s spin -

It’s good to see Binelas bounce back from a horrendous startthat set him back on the mock drafts.

Still have him as my top third baseman.

RHP Ty Madden

If one was to go into a lab to build a right-handed power pitcher, Madden is a prime example of what the finished product would look like. Now that Madden has filled out, he is a tall, muscular pitcher with good athleticism that generates his power fro his lower half, limiting the amount of strain on his arm. He is able to get a strong whip through incredible scapular load. His wrist mechanics are clean. As for his follow-through, he remains balanced and in sync throughout his delivery and finishes without falling off the mound. It is in his load-transfer that there is room for much excitement. His hips do not currently torque much, meaning that, despite generating power from his lower half, he is leaving velocity on the table. It is quite possible that extra coaching and a regimen that emphasizes flexibility (especially in the hips), that Madden could find a bit more zip on his already powerful fastball, giving him a pitch that lives around 96 mph.

Mack’s spin -

Off and on, I have had Madden as my 1.10 pick; however, I be has been passed by a couple of others due to his erratic pitching for Texas.

Right now, I still have him as a mid-1st round pick as my 6th righty.

5-25-21 - Views From 314 feet

RHP Michael McGreevy

McGreevy has an ideal pitcher’s build with his 6’4”, 215-lb frame which combined with his impeccable control sound like he has what it takes to remain a starting pitcher. Pitchers with a 12:1 K:BB ratio are rare – for reference only Gerrit Cole and Zach Eflin have reached those height this season among qualified starters.

A starter’s frame with command plus two solid pitches already (fastball and slider) with the potential for two more (curve and changeup) is exactly what you look for in a pitching prospect. In many ways, McGreevy sounds like a safe pick, yet with the reports of his increased velocity and improving slider there may be even more untapped upside the Yankees could unlock.

Mack’s spin -

Currently, I have him on my board as the 13th righty, just behind Will Bednar, and ahead of McCabe Brown.

  1. So Mack do you agree with the tier one
    And tier 2 designation?
I guess I want to know if we some how land any of 8 tier one should we be thrilled?

    1. I don't agree that Jobe is Tier 1. Tier 2 yes, but not 1.

Bachman and/or Madden will be available whe we pick.

Montgomery is a stretch at Tier 2.

  3. You really need leader boards to keep proper track of all these guys.

I like that the Mets are looking at bats. It freaks me out all these guys (Mets and draftees) going thru Tommy John.

Arms could start in round 2, unless a tier 1 guy falls to them.

Looks like Fabian is getting a haircut of sorts?

Binelas hits 3 HRs - that ought to help him.
