Mack's Top Draft Prospects - #14 - RHP - Ty Madden

Ty Madden

Mack's spin -

The run on righties has begun.

Madden has been erratic for Texas this season, but it really doesn't matter. Plenty of talent here.

11. Nationals: Ty Madden, RHP, Texas

After the Vanderbilt duo, Madden is the next best college option and despite some uneven results, he has a legitimate four-pitch mix and a durable 6-foot-3 frame.

10. Mets: Ty Madden, RHP, Texas

Though Madden has been a trifle inconsistent this spring, he's still a college arm with an impressive combination of stuff, pitchability and track record of success.

14. San Francisco Giants: Ty Madden, RHP, Texas

Madden boasts an above-average fastball, which sits in the high-90s, and an above-average slider. He has consistently improved throughout his career at Texas and has frontline starter potential in pro ball.

8) Rockies: Ty Madden, RHP, Texas

If the Rockies go college arm here, it could also be Gunnar Hoglund, but I moved him down because he was scratched from his start this weekend.

9) Angels (Callis): Ty Madden, RHP, Texas -- He offers stuff, strikes and strength, making him a good bet to be a big league starter.

12. Seattle Mariners: Ty Madden, Texas, RHP

In his prep years, Madden’s fastball stuck around 95. Since then, it can often touch 99 MPH. Seattle is looking good on the farm, and Madden could rise through their ranks and provide some serious starter strength

On a different note, this is the most erratic command I’ve seen from Texasl RHP Ty Madden this season — and he still has allowed just one run through four innings and has two strikeouts

20. RHP Ty Madden | School: Texas | B / T: R / R | Ht: 6’3 | Wt: 215lbs | Age: 21.4

Madden has all the stuff of a top of the class arm, the one thing he is lacking is consistent control/command within the zone. Featuring a 3 pitch mix with 2 Plus pitches in the FB/SL. The heat, literally, touches up to 97 with arm side run. The Slider tunnels exceptionally off of it with 2 plane action creating major issues for hitters, especially RHH who have a tough time laying off the Slider off the plate. The 3rd pitch, a Changeup that shows potential but is lacking behind the 2 others.

Ty Madden, RHP, Texas. A month ago, Madden was one of my three favorite potential names for the Cubs selection. Since then, the redshirt sophomore has allowed a 1.33 ERA and .112 batting average against in his four Friday starts, popping his fastball up to 98 mph with a wipeout slider. And now it seems like he’s far likelier to get drafted near pick ten than pick twenty. (Note that most of what I wrote here also applies to Ole Miss’ Gunnar Hoglund)

3-12-21 - Mets Pick in Mock Draft-

10. New York Mets: Ty Madden, RHP, Texas

Madden has made notable strides in his development in his first 2½ years at Texas. He has the size and diverse repertoire of pitches to thrive as a starter in pro ball. He also has improved his command and control in his time at Texas.

3-8-21 - Prospect Live - Week 3 -

TY MADDEN, RHP, TEXAS

9 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 14 K

Two weeks in a row Madden finds himself highlighted in our stock watch. After totally shutting down BYU last week, Madden turned in an even more impressive performance during week three. It was the best start of his career.

Madden was dominant all night, commanding his fastball brilliantly and allowing the slider and curveball to contrast his mid-to-upper 90s velocity off the edges. Every pitch, including his fastball, was generating whiffs. The heater was still brushing 97 in the last couple innings.

Madden’s game has taken a big step forward in 2021 and now figures to be a pretty consistent talking point inside the top ten picks of the MLB Draft. Given his size, his arsenal, and his big school/big conference track record, there will be a lot of organizations interested come July.

For the season, Madden has 20 innings under his belt, punching out 30 along the way. He’s issued just six free passes. The ERA sits at 1.35 on the year.

3-5-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

Texas RHP Ty Madden's FB command is 70-grade. Just sensational. Slider has been really tight too. Generating whiffs. Mixed in a few changeups. He's got 5 Ks through 5 IP. Just two hits. Becoming one of my favorites arms in the class.

Friday night was the best I have seen Ty Madden's slider in his Longhorn career. Total snapdragon

3-1-21 - Prospect Live -

TY MADDEN, RHP, TEXAS - 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 11 K, 1 BB

After a solid, albeit unspectacular debut in week one against Mississippi State, Madden came back with vengeance this week and completely annihilated the Brigham Young lineup top-to-bottom. His eleven punch outs were a new career high. On the season, Madden now owns a 2.76 ERA over 11 innings. He’s got 16 strikeouts and 4 walks on the year.

Madden had it all cookin’ Friday night for the Longhorns and took a no-hitter into the 7th. The Cypress, Tex. native was up into the upper-90s all night, touching 97 on a few occasions. The heater was stiff with late hop from his signature high-release. The slider had more bite and depth on it than we’d seen from Madden to this point. He mixed in a few changeups for good measure.

 2-22-21 -  First Round Arms -

Ty Madden, RHP, Texas (No. 12)

4 IP, 4 H, 4 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 5 K (79 pitches)

Madden showed flashes of dominance and innings where he fought his control against Mississippi State on Saturday. After striking out the side in the first inning with an explosive fastball/slider combination, it looked like he was going to cruise through the Bulldog lineup.

However, in the second inning he started to lose his release point and the control of his fastball backed up. He made an adjustment in the third and managed first-pitch strikes to each batter to work another 1-2-3 inning, but again starting missing his spots in the fourth after giving up a home run to designated hitter Luke Hancock.

2-15-21 - CBS - Top 50 -

14. Ty Madden, RHP, Texas

Over the last 30 years, Texas has produced just one pitcher who accumulated more than 10 Wins Above Replacement during their career -- that being longtime closer Huston Street. Madden will enter the spring with a chance to go in the top 10 and to alter that statistic. The key for him will be retaining the command gains he made between his freshman and sophomore seasons, as he cut his walk rate from 13 percent to four, albeit in a small sample. Madden has a steep release point from which he delivers a promising three-pitch mix, including a low-to-mid-90s fastball and a slider.

2-4-21 - Big 12  -

Pitcher of the Year: Ty Madden, RHP, Texas

Madden looks poised for a huge year in what might be a banner season for pitchers in the Big 12. After serving as an effective swingman in 2019, the righthander jumped into the weekend rotation full time and thrived in 2020, putting up a 1.80 ERA and a 26-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 25 innings. And while his stuff was already good, with a fastball that sat in the low 90s and touched the mid 90s, it took a jump this fall, with his fastball now running close to triple digits at times, complemented by a plus slider. If Texas reaches its potential in 2021, it’s almost certainly thanks in part to Madden locking down Friday nights.

Areas To Improve: Maintain control development, consistent breaking ball, start full season

Madden took a big step forward in the control department in 25 innings in 2020 after walking more than five batters per nine as a freshman in 2019. That rate was down to 1.4 per nine last spring, but teams will want to see that improved strike-throwing maintained over a full season as a starter. Madden has a fastball/changeup combination that many scouts see as future plus offerings, but he needs to improve the consistency of his hard slider, which lands in the mid 80s, to increase his ceiling even more. Madden has some experience as a starter in both of his years with Texas, but has just 67.1 innings under his belt so starting a full season will be important.
