Harper SNY.TV: Mets takeaways from Friday's 2-1 loss to Phillies, including
tempers flaring. “Marcus Stroman pitched a strong five innings, allowing only
two unearned runs while racking up eight strikeouts before leaving the game
after throwing only 64 pitches because of a “tight hamstring,”…The two runs he
gave up scored on a strike three-passed ball with the bases loaded, when
catcher James McCann appeared to be crossed up on a sinker and failed to get a
glove on a catchable pitch…”
Mets.com:
”Then frustration bubbled over as Alvarado began jawing at Smith, who had been
vocal in his criticisms of the reliever’s inside pitching both on Friday and
earlier this month at Citi Field. Smith whirled and yelled back at Alvarado as
both benches and bullpens cleared, leading to a brief fracas that did not escalate
to a physical confrontation.”
Deesha
Thosar NY Daily News: “Luis Rojas said Alvarado
was instigating a fight. The Phillies left-hander drilled Jeff McNeil on his
arm to leadoff the eighth, then intentionally walked J.D. Davis to face Smith
for the final out of the inning. Rojas said Alvarado was out of line.”
Metstradamus:
“Now yes, I think somebody should have popped Alvarado one and shut him up.”
Brian Joura Mets360: Maybe the way for
the Mets to bust out of their doldrums is to get in a fight and throw some
punches. Of course, if they tried that now, they’d probably swing and miss.

They have scored once in their last 25 innings.”

1965 |
Yogi Berra, appearing in his first
game since 1963, grounds out to first base unassisted when he pinch-hits in
the eighth inning of the Mets' 9-2 loss to the Reds at Crosley Field. The
former Yankees icon, who became a player-coach for the crosstown rivals after
being fired as the Bronx Bombers' manager last fall, will play in four
National League contests, collecting two hits in nine at-bats before retiring
as a player. |
1974 |
Tom Seaver strikes out 16 Dodgers,
giving up only three hits in twelve innings of work, but gets a no-decision
when the Mets lose the Chavez Ravine contest in 14 innings, 2-1. Steve Garvey
strokes a walk-off single to center field off Harry Parker, scoring Billy
Buckner with the winning run. |
1980 |
The Mets are fined by Commissioner
Bowie Kuhn as the result of disparaging remarks made against the Yankees by
Jerry Della Femina, the president of the team's advertising agency. The
high-powered ad man, who is being paid $400,000 to develop a campaign to
bolster the sagging attendance at Shea Stadium, made sarcastic comments about
crosstown rival players Reggie Jackson and Bucky Dent and was quoted to say
their Bronx ballpark was in an unsafe neighborhood. |
1980 |
Mets starter Pete Falcone sets a
franchise record when he strikes out the first six batters he faces, a group
that includes Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt among the half dozen batters, in the
team's 2-1 loss to the Phillies at Shea Stadium. The southpaw's mark remains
intact for 34 years until Jacob
deGrom, who will become the National
League's Rookie of the Year, fans eight Miami batters from the start of a
2014 game to tie Jim Deshaies’ major league record. |
1984 |
Dwight Gooden becomes the first
teenager to strike out at least ten players since Bert Blyleven accomplished
the feat in 1970. The Mets' 19 year-old phenom, who will break Herb Score's
rookie record with 276 Ks this season, will have a total of 15 double-digit
strikeout games this year. |
2000 |
San Francisco's left fielder Barry
Bonds becomes the first player to hit a ball into San Francisco Bay, aka
McCovey's Cove. The first 'splashdown' home run at Pacific Bell Park helps
the Giants to beat the Mets, 10-3. |
2011 |
The Phillies fans attending the
ESPN Sunday Night Game against the Mets start chanting "USA, USA"
when word spreads of the death of Osama Bin Laden. The reaction of the
sellout crowd comes as a surprise to the players on the field, who are
unaware of the historic event. |
1966
- In the course of Pittsburgh's 8 - 0 shellacking of the lowly New
York Mets, in which the latter's total of 4 hits is equaled by Roberto Clemente, the Pirate right fielder
hits one ball, leading off the 4th, that the young Ron Swoboda, playing left field for the Mets
that day, will recall, some thirty years later, as "the hardest ball I
ever saw hit." Bucs beat writer Les Biederman concurs: "The first hit by
Clemente was one to remember. It started out on a line toward the right-center
fence and came within inches of clearing the wall
at the 436-foot sign. It bounced off the wall right back into rookie Billy Murphy's hands." "The ball got
there so fast, and bounced back to Murphy so hard," notes Dick Young of the New York Daily News,
"that the speedy Roberto got only two bases." "But," adds
Biederman, "the blast caused a rumble through the stands and no doubt
unnerved Jack Fisher."
2010:
Roy Halladay throws his second shutout in three starts when the Phillies stop the Mets'
winning streak at 8 games with a 10 - 0 win. Mets starter Mike Pelfrey's scoreless innings streak is
stopped at 27 as he is charged with his first loss of the season.
2011: C Ronny Paulino collects a career high 5 hits in 7 at-bats in his first start for the Mets after serving out a 50-game suspension begun last season, and then spending time on the disabled list with anemia. His 14th-inning double drives in the go-ahead run in a 2 - 1 win over the Phillies. The win is overshadowed by chanting in the stands at Citizens Bank Park as media outlets announce the death of terrorist Osama bin Laden during the 9th inning. Starter Chris Young gives the Mets seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball, but Cliff Lee only gives up one run in 7 for the Phils, who tie the game with a run scored without the benefit of a hit in the 8th. Taylor Buchholz is the winner for the Mets in the marathon game, beating Kyle Kendrick.

ReplyDeleteNever liked Roberto Alomar after he spit in that umpire’s face. He never deserved anything after that, but they put him in the Hall of Fame? Scumbag deserved to be outed, as well as everyone that voted for him.
Happy birthday Stroman? I don’t know about that right now.
And I don’t honk this team has a clue offensively right now, so fight or not, nothing will change.
Does anyone know why I need to use the mobile version to post a comment when I’m using an iPad?
That is strange Gus. Does it revert to the mobile version when you click on comments? If could be that google looks at your iPad as a mobile device.
ReplyDeleteNo, it doesn’t. I need to press on the “View Mobile” in order to leave a comment with my name. If I want to leave a comment on the original web page - which it defaults to when I open the site - I would have to log in with Facebook or Google or some other spying site.
ReplyDeleteDoor # 1 or Door # 2
ReplyDelete1) HEFTY HEFTY HEFTY
2) WIMPY WIMPY WIMPY
This team is Door # 2.
Figure it out. Hit. Was ANYONE surprised that McCann would ground into a double play with the tying run 90 feet from the plate? Not me.
Was this Pillar the Comedian? He's a total joke so far.
I'm getting closer to wanting the ultimate trade - find another team - TRADE THE ENTIRE OFFENSE.
I watched almost none of the game last night. Why? The one thing I hate most is an offense in sore need of a double dose of Viagra. The Mets need a triple dose (sorry, Brandon, except for you).
Perhaps it is time for a different approach. Make contact and aggressive running. The 2019 Cyclones were the most exciting Mets team I ever saw. Gotta bring in Fonzie to help set a new offensive coach for the organization.
ReplyDeleteThe Sky Isn't Falling, Trust Me
ReplyDeleteOkay everyone. We need to take a deep breath. Breathe in. Hold it. Hold it. Release.
There. I feel better. The sun is out.
Can we laugh a little bit here for a moment? (Jokes)
Andres Gimenez, despite admitting the other day in Cleveland that he is actually a 35 years old Venezuelan shortstop, is now batting a .260 BA with 2 homeruns, and 9 RBI's. He said that he very much liked the trade and wished his younger friend Francisco Lindor the very best.
Outfielder Dominic Smith I hear is contemplating switching careers over to the WWE. His new name will be "Tunnel Vision Man."
Pitcher Carlos Carrasco is now walking again and saying that he should be back in time for the pennant run, if there is one.
Catcher James McCann said that he was certain that the homeplate umpire had that outside pitch with his knee. Admits that he was somewhat distracted by a large busted woman out over the outfield wall in Daisy Dukes. Apologizes and will get horse blinders made.
Why not laugh. It costs nothing, and I for one have complete confidence in this 2021 NY Mets team to turn it back around very soon. It has way too much talent and good chemistry. Just needs a beach Pigroast with PBR's. Works for me.
Have faith everyone. We had six hits last night and not the usual 2-4! See!
You Gotta' Believe [45]. I do.
The Mets Recent Press Coverage
ReplyDeleteWhat's with these guys anyway? Are they normal?
They seem to want to blame everything possible on JD Davis. I think that it's the three bad throws in one game last week. One of which John Olerud probably would have caught at first base since it was a typical David Wright one-hop blazer throw to first up into the glove there.
The bestowed upon NY Mets press wants Luis Guillorme platooning 50/50% with JD at third. Sure. That makes sense, especially now with Luis out hurt and JD batting only a mere what....395 BA? Hello. The Mets have exactly two batters hitting over .300 (JD and Nimmo) and the Mets beat writers want to platoon JD Davis at third base.
Oy vey. Pass the beer nuts! Something ain't right here.
Marcus Stroman Goes Down With a Torn Hamstring...
ReplyDeleteThis according to the somewhat (at least) perpetually drunken NY Sports media crew at "Coloring Books Are Us" owned by that one time no good muppet who could not stop swearing on television ten years ago and was booted.
The report states that the outstanding doctor team at Boombatz, Boombatz, and Boombatz has total confidence that Marcus should be at able to at least walk to the bathroom, within the next ten to twelve month time period, but only if if everything goes right with the cast and new cat hamstring they inserted.
Any truth to the Jed Lowrie for Francisco Lindor trade rumors? Mets agreeing to throw in $300 million. Oakland not sure.
