Alvarez hits second home run of the season
JUPITER, Fla. (May 23, 2021) – The St. Lucie Mets defeated the Palm Beach Cardinals 9-4 on Sunday afternoon to wrap up a road trip in which they finished with a 9-3 record.
The Mets held a slim 1-0 lead through five innings until Francisco Alvarez demolished a three-run homer to give the Mets a 4-0 advantage.
Clutch pitching by Liam McCall in the bottom of the sixth and the seventh inning limited the Cardinals to just two runs on an infield hit and sac fly.
The Mets broke the game open with five runs on seven hits in the ninth inning. Warren Saunders led off with a double and was driven in by Jose Colina’s single. Later in the inning Ranfy Adon pulled a two-run single into left field to push the lead to 7-2. Shervyen Newton and Tanner Murphy added RBI singles to make it 9-2
Mets starter Austin Faith blanked the Cardinals over four impressive innings with seven strikeouts. McCall earned his first win by pitching two scoreless innings. Willy Taveras picked up his first save of the season.
Nine of the 10 position players used by the Mets recorded a hit. Alvarez, Saunders, Murphy, Cole Kleszcz and Jimmy Titus had two hits apiece.
The Mets (13-5) are off on Monday. They return to the diamond on Tuesday to open a six-game home stand against the Daytona Tortugas at Clover Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
