Syracuse - Early Mets lead evaporates in 7-4 loss to Red Wings

 

Rochester, NY - The Syracuse Mets led 4-0 after three innings, but the Rochester Red Wings scored seven consecutive runs, including six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 7-4 win over the Mets on Wednesday night at Frontier Field.

Syracuse (5-15) got the scoring started in the top of the first inning. Mason Williams led off the game with a single. Williams moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Nick Meyer, and Williams advanced to third on a Sebastian Elizalde groundout to second. Then, with David Thompson batting, a wild pitch allowed Williams to score for a 1-0 Syracuse lead.

The Mets extended their advantage in the third. With one out and Cody Bohanek at second base, Williams singled to left-center field, scoring Bohanek as the Mets took a 2-0 edge. Meyer followed with a single, and Elizalde walked to load the bases. With Thompson, batting, another wild pitch scored Williams again from third to make it a 3-0 game. Thompson then singled home Meyer from third, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Rochester (5-15) scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth. Daniel Palka led off the frame with a solo home run to trim the Syracuse advantage to three, 4-1.

The Red Wings came all the way back and took the lead in the sixth. With runners at first and second and no outs, Jake Noll singled to left field, and a fielding error allowed Palka to score on the play to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Snyder worked a bases-loaded walk to cut Syracuse’s lead to one, 4-3. Gerardo Parra followed with a bases-clearing triple that put Rochester in front, 6-4. Parra then scored on a wild pitch to give the Red Wings a 7-4 advantage.

Syracuse had two runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings but did not score as Rochester secured the 7-4 victory.

The Mets and Red Wings meet again on Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field for a 1:05 p.m. game.
