Mack - More Weekly Draft Notes

6-1-21 - myplaneview -

Justice Thompson, OF, North Carolina

Ranked 13th on MLB.com’s prospect board, Thompson is a free-swinging bat that is the definition of a hit-or-miss player. Over 51 games this season, Thompson has totaled seven home runs, eight doubles and 24 RBIs. That’s when he makes contact on the ball, though.

Entering the Lubbock Regional, Thompson has totaled more strikeouts (63) than he has hits (62). His .312 batting average comes with a .847 on-base percentage. When Thompson is able to get on base, he’s a threat to steal, accounting for half of North Carolina’s stolen bases on the year. He’s swiped 14 bags in 16 attempts.

Thompson was voted onto the All-ACC second team this season.

Mack’s spin -

My 20th OF.

6-1-21 - myplaneview -

Cal Conley, INF, Texas Tech

The first team All-Big 12 shortstop comes in at No. 161 on MLB.com’s prospect rankings. Conley ranks third on Texas Tech in batting average (.342), second in total hits (70), tied for second in home runs (13) and third in runs batted in.

Conley didn’t get much of a chance to show off his skills in 2020, but he did enough in the shortened season to be named a third team All-American and a member of the Freshman All-American team by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

6-1-21 - myplaneview -

Jesse Bergin, P, UCLA – ranked 177th overall by MLB.com. Compiled a 6-3 record in 15 starts with a 4.24 earned run average, allowing 77 hits, 47 runs, 35 earned runs and striking out 87.

6-1-21 - myplaneview -

Noah Cardenas, C, UCLA – ranked 182nd on MLB.com’s prospect list. Cardenas probably has the least impressive statline among the players that will be playing in Lubbock this weekend. Entering the regional, Cardenas has a .258 batting average, 27 RBIs, five home runs and 12 doubles.

6-1-21 - myplaneview -

Dru Baker, OF, Texas Tech – ranked 184th by MLB.com. Leads the Red Raiders in total hits (71), batting average (.372) and runs scored (51).

SS Marcelo Mayer

A left-handed hitter, Mayer is batting .437 through 25 games. He has 13 home runs, 40 RBIs and 39 runs scored. In 103 plate appearances, which includes 25 walks, he has struck out just three times. And he has 16 stolen bases.

5-31-21 - lwos -

RHP Jack Leiter

Leiter has a small frame for a starting pitcher. His size can be similar to Marcus Stroman, though he has added some strength to his physique. As an overall pitcher, he draws comparisons to Vanderbilt alumn and current Cincinnati Red Sonny Gray. Gray was a dominant force on the mound during his years at Vanderbilt. Both pitchers share similar physical attributes, but Leiter has the upper hand over Gray. The velocity on his fastball is slightly above Gray’s. They also have identical mechanics, but Leiter has four potential 55 grade-plus pitches, something Gray never had. Either way, Leiter will be a promising pitcher for whichever team takes in early in the draft.

OF Colton Cowser

MLB Comp

Comparisons are an interesting aspect of the scouting process. They give an idea as to how the scouts and experts compare skill-sets between the draft prospect and current MLB players. Cowser has drawn comparisons to a lot of Major Leaguers, but the two most similar are Brandon Nimmo and Bradley Zimmer. Both are lefty-swinging center fielders with good speed and pop. Cowser has a very controlled approach, which is one of Nimmo’s calling cards.

5-30-21 - PG College Baseball  @PGCollegeBall

Christian Franklin gets this one to drop in right center field and finds himself on third for Arkansas. Projects as a CF at the next level and went in the competitive balance part of the first round of the latest PG Mock Draft

5-29-21 - Trueblue LA -

There isn’t much effort in Ryan Cusick’s delivery and his arm works well, but he has yet to provide consistent strikes. As impressive as his arm strength is, he’ll have to be more efficient to succeed as a starter at higher levels. His huge 6-foot-6 frame and high arm slot provide angle and plane on his pitches and add to the difficulty of trying to barrel them.

Mack’s spin -

It’s not like Ryan has gone down on my list because of something he did bad. It just the fact that others have passed him because of their accomplishments this year.

I… right now… have him as my 8th RHP, behind Rocker, Leiter, Madden, Bachman, Jobe, Painter, and Chandler.

5-29-21 - Yahoo Mock - Mets Pick -

10. New York Mets: RHP Sam Bachman – Miami (Ohio)

If you are looking for an arm with premier stuff, Bachman is your guy. He has two true plus-plus pitches. His fastball sits 95-98 mph and has touched 102 mph, and his slider is in the mid-to-upper 80s. Both pitches produce a lot of swings and misses. His changeup isn’t frequently used in game, but in workouts and using Rapsodo data, it shows plus movement. He just has not thrown it a lot in college, and he will need to refine that in pro ball to avoid the worry some teams have that he'll end up as a reliever. The upside with Bachman is sky high, but he also has a lower floor than some other options who could end up being considered at this spot.

Mack’s spin -

Currently, my 4th righty, right in place for the Mets to pick.
