Mack's spin -
Not many .258 hitters with 76 strikeouts in 216 at-bats makes the first round, but not many players that hit 20 home runs in the regular season for a pitching talented SEC conference doesn't either.
Fabian had a tough swing and miss year but he is still one of the few quality power bats in this draft.
If you don't pick him, he could follow the footsteps of Pete Alonso and really hurt you down the line.

Jud Fabian: Fabian made our list of top sluggers earlier this year, and that's primarily what earns him his spot here. Those 20 home runs are tied for the third-most in college baseball. There is some swing and miss, but despite the low average, that bat speed and sheer strength are enough to show that Fabian's power is for real.

Deviation from that mark indicates that a player may have been playing above or below his true talent level. Fabian’s batting average on balls in play during the 2021 season was .284, which suggests he completely earned his impressive slash line.
It wasn’t all sunshine for the Orange and Blue slugger during the 2021 season. He carried a strikeout rate north of 30% through most of the season and saw his national perception as a draft prospect nosedive as a result. There’s virtually no track record of success in the pros for players with that kind of swing and miss at the college level.

The strikeout rate might still concern some, but it’s tapered off since a sluggish start and Fabian is now tied for the Division I lead in homers while playing in the ultra-competitive SEC.

Jud Fabian, OF, Florida (No. 28)
We wrote about a mechanical adjustment Fabian implemented in last week’s stock watch, and after a 4-for-9 weekend that featured two home runs, a double, five walks and just one strikeout, Fabian’s strikeout rate is down to 27.7%. Fabian is one of the most interesting prospects in the class and one of the most difficult to find consensus on among scouts. His strikeout rate will be one of the most interesting numbers to watch as the season progresses, but don’t sleep on the fact that his 18 home runs are among the top five of Division I hitters.

25. A's: Jud Fabian, OF, Florida
Fabian fell from top-five consideration when he posted an alarming 38 percent strikeout rate and hit .240 in the first six weeks. He's on the rise again after batting .302 with a 17 percent whiff rate in the last month, and his upside as a power-hitting center fielder could carry him back toward the first 10 picks if he keeps this up.

A Mechanical Adjustment By Jud Fabian
We’ve written previously about how Fabian’s strikeout rates could be concerning for teams. However, the toolsy Florida outfielder has made an adjustment in his approach within the last few weeks and it seems to be working.
After Florida’s series against Missouri, Fabian eliminated his stride in two-strike counts. You can see mechanical adjustments in the clips below from an April 25 game against Auburn within a fourth-inning at-bat against lefthander Peyton Glavine (yes, the son of Hall of Famer, Tom Glavine).

A couple guys who really struggled out the gates are finding their footing here the last couple weeks.

No. 49 - OF Jud Fabian
Jud Fabian entered this season projected in the top 10 if not higher for this year’s upcoming draft, but an underwhelming third year at the plate has many now hesitant about taking him that early. A breakout season in 2020 in which he slashed .294 BA/.407 OBP/.603 SLG while scoring 19 runs and knocking in 13 thanks in part to five home runs among other notable numbers earned him D1Baseball’s SEC Preseason Player of the Year coming into 2021.
This spring has seen a bit of regression in the promising prospect, as it seems he has traded his batting average for power, hitting just .252 in 147 at-bats with 54 strikeouts and 22 walks, but also 13 home runs, 36 runs and 32 RBI to show for it. He has also been mostly solid in centerfield, though he has had a gaffe or two out there, but overall he has not been who everyone thought he was in February. Fabian would likely benefit from another season at Florida but is unlikely to turn down a second-round selection.

OF Jud Fabian
He is in the top ten in the country for home runs as it stands currently with 11 home runs over 32 games played for the Gators. The MLB list has not been updated since the Spring season has begun, so Fabian could very well be higher up on this list than eighth, where he currently sits.

8. Colorado Rockies: Jud Fabian, OF, Florida
As is the case with many prospects this year, Fabian is having a hard time finding consistent footing at the beginning of the season. A natural hitter with more hit ability than power, Fabian wowed scouts with his ability to hit to all fields and his maturity at the plate. In the wood bat leagues, he never laid off the gas. If he can find his groove and get back to where he was, he’ll return to the top-five.

It’s hard to have a more poorly timed slump than the one the Florida center fielder is enduring right now.
Fabian is 1-for-24 over his past six games. He does have four walks over that stretch but he also has 17 strikeouts.
We looked at every pitch of the last six games for Fabian. And what’s clear is that while he pulls off of sliders away, it’s fastballs that are beating him right now.
Of those 17 strikeouts in the past six games, strike three came on a fastball 13 times—11 times he swung through it while twice he took a fastball for strike three. Only four of the whiffs came on breaking balls. His lone hit of the past two weeks was a home run off a Drew McDaniel slider.

Jud Fabian very likely is the most talented player in the 2021 Class, and one of the few prospects in the class with legitimate 5 tool potential. He enrolled early into Florida out of HS (will be just 20.8 years old on Draft Day) so he has youth on his side. While also getting challenged at the college level and performed very well against older competition in a strong SEC Conference loaded with high-end pitching. A strong floor with a high ceiling that will produce multiple All-Star Caliber seasons. There is swing and miss concerns, but I think the talent wins out in the end. Similar to Tommy Pham.

You just have to feel for Jud Fabian at this point. He's 0 for 12 this weekend with 10 strikeouts. His K-rate is up to 41.1%.
Love the power. Hate the strikeouts. Quite risky.
