- Stat of the Day: deGrom great through 8 - "deGrom great through eight starts. With six scoreless innings of two-hit ball, Jacob deGrom lowered his ERA to 0.71, the fourth-lowest mark by a pitcher through eight starts of a season (dating back to 1912 in the National League and 1913 in the American League), per the Elias Sports Bureau, putting him behind only Fernando Valenzuela (0.50 in 1981), Mike Norris (0.52 in 1980) and Zack Greinke (0.60 in 2009). deGrom's 0.57 WHIP through eight starts is the lowest since the current mound distance was set in 1893."

Looking for new ways to define deGrom's greatness? This may be my favorite stat.
— Steve Gelbs (@SteveGelbs) June 1, 2021
Coming into tonight, he led the majors with 13.4 pitches per inning. He also led MLB with 14.8 K/9.
He's striking out the world, while simultaneously being the most efficient pitcher in the game.
After Jacob deGrom threw his first curveball of the season, it's worth remembering something that Jeremy Hefner told me this spring.
— Steve Gelbs (@SteveGelbs) June 1, 2021
Hefner says deGrom's curveball is elite. Like, one of the best curves in Major League Baseball. He simply doesn't need it, so he doesn't use it.

McWilliams is the big shock to me. He struggled a ton with his control in spring training and at Syracuse, but the Mets did like him enough to sign him to a guaranteed $750,000 deal this winter.

Alas, he is now off the 40-man and potentially soon gone from the organization.
#Mets have released OF Mallex Smith.

Tim
Healey Newsday: Righthanded reliever Sam McWilliams was designated for
assignment. In a month with Triple-A Syracuse, though, Sam McWilliams struggled.
He had a 10.80 ERA in seven games, walking eight (and striking out 10) in 8 1/3
innings.
Tom Verducci SI.com: Inside the Mets' Extraordinary Improvement on Defense. “After four straight seasons wasting elite arms with a bottom five defense, the Mets are a top-four defensive team. They have done so by beefing up their analytics department, using more than twice as many shifts as they did last year, and by relying on human connection to get players to buy into cold, hard data. It is a modern baseball success story of marrying information with performance.

Ahh, Pillar, Mason Williams, and McKinney...are you missing Maybin and Lee as much as I am?
ReplyDeletePillar is amazing - words do not do justice.
Jake has progressed in his career: from really good, to great, to greater, to greatest.
Pete returns, Mets exhale. Now it is time to crush June. Heck, Lindor is almost back to .200.
What I missed most on Monday? Minor League ball. No, not really.
Thought it made no sense having no minor league games yesterday. It would have made more sense to play tomorrow on Memorial Day when people were off from work and have off today.
ReplyDeletePillar is a great story, but I hope he doesn’t reinjure those sensitive nasal bones. I understand why he rushed back, but sometimes people need to be protected from themselves.
ReplyDeleteMallex Smith cut? Wow! He hasn’t even played a game yet.
We give Rojas alot of crap over every single move we aren’t happy with, but how about a little love with how he has been guiding the ship so far this year?
John, that’s an extra night of hotel rooms... meals...
ReplyDeleteI saw something saying Mallex Smith was rehabbing, but it was a brief snippet. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteSuffice it to say that if he was not able to play when 4 outfielders went down, something was wrong in Mallex Ville.
With Mallex Smith it is possible that he received a bonus if he was still on the roster on June 1. Other players were released and re-signed yesterday for that reason. Same could happen with Mallex.
ReplyDeleteHe broke his foot right before season started.
I look at grim, dour Joe Girardi with the Phils and I'm sure glad he's not the Mets manager. He's old school w/ a touch of Dallas Green -- I don't think he's the answer to the modern baseball club.
ReplyDeleteRojas fits the new model and, yes, he's done a good job so far. He's like an office manager, a middle manager, and he's steady, calm, clear -- and he knows he's not the boss.
When it comes to fans, I think managers are as good as their bullpens. That's the easiest, fastest complaint; fans love to pick apart "bullpen usage." But in the end, if the pen is great, you look brilliant. If the pen fails, you pushed the wrong button.
I like Rojas.
Jimmy
On No. 11 Pillar
ReplyDeleteMust be like stepping into the boxing ring to face the guy who knocked you out a few months back. Fabulous. Somewhere Mets SS Roy McMillan (#11) is smiling.
Wasn't surprised by any of the roster moves of recent except one. I liked Sean-Reid Foley and hoped he stick. Has skills.
ReplyDeleteFoley - having options left is a two-edged sword, with which you can get unfairly cut.
ReplyDeleteI think when you are constructing the modern bullpen, ideally you have 2-3 guys in the minors who can be called up to help out here and there. Having guys with options is at a premium.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many guys who don't -- who can't be send down -- that it's really important to have those flex guys who you can move around.
Reid-Foley has been impressive. For me, more for his mound demeanor than his "stuff," per say. He just seems to have the right "get after it" mentality of a Tommy Hunter type. Attack, attack, attack. I like him and he'll be back.
