BINGHAMTON, NY – Brett Baty was 4-4 with 6 RBI, including hitting the go-ahead two-run double as the Rumble Ponies held off the Erie Seawolves 14-13 in a wild contest on Saturday night at Mirabito Stadium. The Rumble Ponies (27-41) overcame deficits of 7-2, 8-4, and 11-7 to pull out the win (Box Score).
Baty also had a two-run homer in the third, two-run single in the fourth, a double in the first, a walk in the sixth, and scored three runs as he finished a triple shy of the cycle. It was in the bottom of the seventh though with the bases loaded and two out that Baty smacked a two-run double off the left-field wall that gave the Ponies a 12-11 lead as part of a six-run inning. The next batter Mark Vientos followed with a two-run single that scored Carlos Cortes and Baty to give the Ponies a 14-11 lead.
After the Seawolves (39-32) scored two in the eighth, Tommy Wilson came in to close out the game in the ninth. He was able to work out of a bases loaded one out jam striking out Ryan Kriedler and Spencer Torkelson to end the game.
The two teams combined for seven home runs, highlighted by a grand slam from Dillon Dingler as part of a five-run third that gave Erie a 7-2 lead. Wagner Lagrange also went deep for the Ponies in the first inning, his seventh of the year, as he has now hit safely in nine consecutive starts.
The two teams combined for 27 runs and 28 hits with every member of the Binghamton starting lineup reaching base at least once.
Eric Orze (2-0) gets the win in relief while Wilson gets his first save of the season. Ruben Garcia (2-2) takes the loss for Erie.
The Ponies go for the series win on Sunday afternoon with first pitch at 1:05 PM.
POSTGAME NOTES: Baty is the second Rumble Ponies player to drive in 6 RBI on the season as Wagner Lagrange also did so on July 2nd at Richmond in the first game of a doubleheader…the 14 runs scored by the Ponies is a season-high… Carlos Cortes was 1-3 with two runs scored, three RBI, and walked twice with the bases loaded.
Nice for Baty and Cortes.
ReplyDeleteWhen Jake is out, it is disturbing to see one of the other core starters get roughed up. But Toronto is one of the teams that his better than the Mets. AGAIN, it shows how darned impressive Megill has been.
Huge night for Baty. Cortes just continues to produce everyday. Cortes is Rule 5 eligible this winter. If you are the Mets, are you adding him to the 40 man? If you are another team, are you drafting him?
ReplyDeleteJohn, so the year off did not change Rule 5 by pushing that out a year? As of right now, I would add him.
ReplyDeleteJust when u thought it couldn’t get any freakier, we get Peterson’s injury.
No - the year off did not change the Rule 5 provisions. KInda crazy but it is what it is.
ReplyDeleteI agree. You have to add Cortes to the 40 man. Mets just have way too little prospect depth.
Mauricio is also eligible this year. He will will most definitely be added as well.
It will be interesting how this may impact trades this week.
It will impact all teams to a greater or lesser degree. However, if de Oca finishes strong, with a 100 MPH heater, they have to protect him. I think a sign is they started his career out in Brooklyn. He could easily be the bullpen version of Megill. Of course, he needs refinement, but let's see how that goes. If his control improves, I see no reason he could not be in the Mets pen in 2022. You protect that.
ReplyDeleteCortes also has to be added to the 40 man, unless he gets traded this week or before Rule 5 date. Seems to be a lot of upside. Remember, he has compiled his stats despite not getting to hit against Binghamton pitching!
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to see another bad pitching team, Baltimore, beat the Nats. The Mets get the Yanks, the Bats get the Orioles. SMH
