Press Release: Ponies Win In Grand Style Over Seawolves


BINGHAMTON, NY – David Rodriguez hit the Rumble Ponies (26-40) first grand slam in over two years to defeat the Erie Seawolves 6-4 on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Ponies would load the bases with three consecutive base hits from Brett Baty, Wagner Lagrange, and Hayden Senger. Following a Matt Winaker strikeout, Rodriguez would hit a go-ahead grand-slam over the centerfield wall to put the Ponies up 5-2. It was the Ponies first grand slam since May 5th 2019 when Kevin Kaczmarski hit one against Portland at Hadlock Field. 

The Seawolves took the lead for the third straight game with a Spencer Torkelson two-run home-run in the third inning. Carlos Cortes would respond with a solo shot to cut the deficit in half in the home half of the third inning.

Torkelson would pick up another RBI on a double in the eighth to cut the Ponies lead to 5-3 before Carlos Cortes would come around to score from first on an error to put the Ponies back up 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth.

Erie (38-31) would threaten in the ninth, scoring a run to cut the Ponies lead to 6-4 and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate, but Eric Orze came on to record the final two outs and earn the save.

Dustin Beggs earned his first win in a Ponies uniform going 5.1 innings allowing two runs while A.J. Ladwig earned the loss allowing five runs over 5.2 innings. Ponies pitcher Connor Grey went 3.1 innings in relief allowing one earned run and Eric Orze picked up his first save of the year.

The Rumble Ponies will continue their homestand as they face the Seawolves Friday night with first pitch at 7:05 PM ET.

POSTGAME NOTES: Ponies OF Carlos Cortes hit his second home-run in three games and now has five RBI this series.
