Press Release: Seawolves Late Rally the Difference in Victory over Ponies on Friday Night


BINGHAMTON, NY – The Erie Seawolves (39-31) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 3-1 in front of 4,204 fans on Friday night at Mirabito Stadium (Box Score).

Binghamton (26-41) had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth on a long home run by Mark Vientos to left center field, his 17th of the year. In the ninth, Josh Lester hit a two-out two-run single off Tom Hackimer to give Erie a 2-1 lead. The Seawolves tacked on a run as Brady Policelli stole second and Lester stole home.

After Luis Carpio and David Rodriguez were retired to begin the bottom of the ninth, Nick Meyer doubled to left. Pinch-hitter Carlos Cortes then walked, and Jake Mangum reached first on a throwing error by Erie third baseman Andre Lipcius. With the bases loaded and two out, Brett Baty struck out swinging to end the game.

Binghamton starter Adam Oller threw four and two thirds hitless innings with three walks and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts. He was in a pitcher's duel with Erie starter Joey Wentz who allowed one hit over four innings as both received no-decisions. Gerson Moreno (4-2) gets the win while Hackimer (0-1) takes the loss and blown save. Cale Coshow earns his third save of the year.

The two teams have now split the first four games of the six-game set. The series continues Saturday night with first pitch at 6:35 PM.

POSTGAME NOTES: RF Carlos Rincon in his Rumble Ponies debut reached base three times… Wagner Lagrange has hit safely in his last 8 starts…Allan Winans pitched two and a third scoreless innings of relief…Andrew Edwards threw a scoreless eighth inning…
