Trenton, NJ - The Syracuse Mets lost their fifth straight game on Friday night, as the Buffalo Bisons beat the Mets, 10-6, at Trenton Thunder Ballpark (Box Score). Left-handed pitcher Josh Walker started the game for the Mets, making his Triple-A debut. The 26-year-old threw four and one-third innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out three.
Syracuse (23-46) didn't waste any time getting on the board. In the top of the first inning, Mason Williams hit a solo home run over the right-center-field wall to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse added two runs in the top of the second. Cheslor Cuthbert worked a leadoff walk, and then Tovar was hit by a pitch. After Khalil Lee struck out, César Puello connected on a one-run single, scoring Cuthbert to increase the Mets lead to 2-0. With Drew Jackson at the plate and Tovar at third base, Puello stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Syracuse. Jackson walked to load the bases, and Albert Almora Jr. followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Tovar to hand the Mets a 3-0 lead.
Buffalo (42-25) tied it up in the bottom of the third. Dilson Herrera and Nash Knight both hit one-out singles, and Logan Warmoth followed with a three-run homer to make the score 3-3.
Syracuse took back the lead in the top of the fifth. Williams hit a leadoff single, and Brandon Drury followed with a walk. Patrick Mazeika then followed with a one-run single, scoring Williams to give the Mets a 4-3 lead.
Buffalo responded with a big bottom of the fifth. Knight and Warmoth led off with singles. Kevin Smith then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Knight to third base and Warmoth to second. Tyler White followed with a two-run double to hand the Bisons their first lead, 5-4. Christian Colón then scored White with an RBI single to increase the lead to two, 6-4. After Cullen Large walked, Geoff Hartlieb came out of the bullpen to replace Walker. The first batter that Hartlieb faced, Riley Adams, hit a two-run double to make it 8-4 Buffalo.
In the top of the seventh, Williams led off with a walk. Drury then grounded out, but Williams advanced to second. Mazeika followed, reaching on an error by the first baseman White as Williams moved to third. Cuthbert followed with a walk, loading the bases with one out. Tovar then flew out for the second out. With Lee at the plate, Williams scored on a passed ball to get the Mets within three, 8-5. Snead then struck out Lee for the third out, limiting the damage.
Buffalo added to its lead in the bottom of the seventh. Adams hit a one-out double, and Richard Ureña followed with an RBI single to make it 9-5 Bisons.
In the top of the eight, Puello led off with a home run to make it a three-run game again, 9-6 Bisons.
Buffalo took their four-run lead back in the bottom of the eighth. Smith led off with a walk, and as White was walked, Smith advanced to third on a wild pitch by A.J. Schugel. After Colón struck out, Large hit into an RBI groundout, scoring Smith to give the Bisons a 10-6 lead.
The Mets and Bisons return to Trenton Thunder Ballpark on Saturday for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. Right-hander Alex Sanabia will make the start for Syracuse in game five of the six-game series.
