Remember 1969: Remember's Ramblings for seven seven

Remember's Ramblings:  July 7, 2021

Perhaps it should be Remember's Rumblings - the thunder does not quit these days.

Mets:

As we sit between the two games of the double header with the Brewers, I am now convinced that the Mets are really a good team.

There is no quit in them.    Almost a third (14 of 45) of their wins are walk-offs.

I would have liked them to score at least the tying run when they had the bases loaded in the sixth inning, but I'll take what I can get.

Peraza is a clutch player.  I just saw a stat and now cannot find it again that 10 (or was it 13?) of his 18 RBI either tied the game or put them in the lead.

This is the type of team that can go deep in October.    Pitching and character go a long way.   So do ten-run first innings, but you can't have everything.

And as I sit here between the two games of the double header with the Brewers, I see the announced lineup for the second game.   Headscratching.   No McNeil.  With his 2 for 4 and walk-off single, he needs the continuity.   Nimmo has been a key at the top of the line-up.  He had a day off yesterday.   Why not play him again?

Other:

The Arizona Diamondbacks are on a historically bad run.   If they keep up their current play, they will surpass the '62 Mets as the all time worst team.

Consider that as they entered play on May 1, they were two games over .500 at 14-12.   On Tuesday May 11, they won their second game in a row for the first time that month and it got them to 17-19.   They have not won two in a row since.

Since May 11, they have won 7 and lost 44, a winning percentage of .137;  hard to do (and they have won 3 of their last 7 (.300) to get to that point).

That has to be a very difficult clubhouse to be in.  Losing is not easy.

Other, part 2:

You think the Mets have had issues with the injury list?   The White Sox lost two of their starting outfielders for most of the year before the year even got going (or shortly into it).   Now their starting catcher is down for four to six weeks.    They still lead their division by eight games.

Billy Hamilton is playing a lot of games for them.  Also, it was interesting to read this morning that Cleveland just signed Wilson Ramos to a minor league deal, just after I read that Grandal was down until mid-August.

And finally, if you are into feel-good stories and are not watching the Detroit Tigers, you are missing a very promising up and coming team.   Now only 3 games out of second place.   On May 3, they were 14 games under .500; since then they are seven games over.

  1. Hey, buddy - nice post.

7 and 44 for Arizona is so much better than that Philly 76er team that went 9-73. But pretty darned horrible.

Billy Hamilton is yet another head shaker - horrible with Mets, does well elsewhere. Maybe Cameron Maybin should go to the White Sox. He'd hit .300.

Lots of walk off wins - other than injuries, Mets leading a charmed life to 1) be above .500 and 2) to have the other division teams all playing below expectations. Cookie could be back in the rotation in perhaps 3 weeks? if the good Cookie shows up and not one where the Cookie package is past its expiration date, that will be a huge boost.

  2. When JD returns, who is the odd man out. I think Perazza.

  3. Peraza will play less, but I don't think he'll be out. Davis is just 4 for 23, 5 walks, 9 Ks in AAA, so I hope they don't rush him back. To me, after the ASB would be fine. Give him one more AAA series to sharpen up.
