Tom Brennan - TOO MANY METS PLAYERS ARE IN A SEASON-LONG RBI DROUGHT

OY! SUCH STENCH!

Just 3 lousy, stinking runs on 12 hits on Thursday in the rubber match against the rival Braves.

Change the team's name to the New York LOBs, perhaps?

A simple notion is that the higher a team's RBIs, the higher its runs scored.

Six teams have already scored 500 or more runs this season.

I'm sure they all have high RBIs.

The Mets' hitters, though?

They seem to want the pitchers to be Supermen for 162 games.

What have the hitters produced?

Just 389 runs.

Why?

Several guys are knocking in runners like it's Mets circa 1968.

1968 was the "Death Valley Days" of Mets franchise hitting.

The 2021 bunch stinks in the clutch like they baked in a hot desert sun.

I know the excuses...stuff like:

The dog ate my batting gloves.

I left my contact lenses home.

I'm under-used.

I'm over-used.

Forget the excuses.

The result of lousy team hitting with men on base?

A veritable dearth of RBIs.

In fact, Lindor, Davis, Conforto, Villar, Pillar, Guillorme, McCann, McNeil, Nimmo and Nido - TEN of their offensive players - have had 1,760 official at bats this year and, despite 57 homers, have knocked in a paltry 189 runs.

Shades of 1968.

Over the prototypical 500 at bats, that's what?  A 54 RBI pace!

Gag me with a spoon.

Make all the excuses you want - that flat out stinks.   Brutal.

Pete Alonso has 62 RBIs - good for him - he is 22nd in RBIs despite his 10 game DL stint, or he'd be higher-ranked.

Dominic Smith has 45 RBIs after a slow start, not great but not that bad.  Except it only makes him 85th highest in the majors.

So - Dom's RBI total objectively is mediocre by MLB ranking.

The rest of them?

Lots of Limburger.

They stink - badly - at least so far this year.

I have been really pulling for our guys.

Thought in February this could be a great offense.

But if they do not pick it up substantially?

Shake this team up.

A little change now would be fine.

And a lot at year end too.

I want guys whose main skill is to knock in runs.

They don't have to be loved.

Albert Belle, for example, was hated by many.

All he did was average 123 RBIs a year over his last 9 seasons.

I'll take a double portion of RBIs with a side of nasty, myself.

How about you?

  1. We have long passed the unbelievable stage when it comes to our dearth of rbi but something has to be done. The evil empire just got MUCH stronger and the Dodgers get Scherzer AND Turner....REALLY dam! The question is do we finish our games with LA and SF in 3rd place a very real possibility and if the FO thinks so do they go all in with big trades now?

  2. Gary, we have a razor thin margin for error without trades. But you trade a prospect, you may regret it. Case in point: Mark Vientos. Forget any negatives about him - the positive is 17 HRs in his last 34 games, stunning stuff.

  3. I have NO idea why the Mets want Story. Is Lindor injury so severe that he is not coming back this year? No? then just wait for him.

If anything, the Mets need a good starter, but with Carrasco back and Syndergaard to hopefully follow, you have to think long and hard before giving up top prospects for a rental.

Unless JD Davis is the trade bait, the Mets should just stay put.

  4. Viper, good points. If I were another team, I would want Jaylen Palmer thrown in. He gets better every month.
