Tom Brennan - WHAT METS’ DEALS WOULD YOU MAKE?

There is always a deal to be made.

Some deals, everyone talks about.

In that regard, two questions:

1) What deal that no one is talking about would you make?

2) What deal do you think the Mets need to make the most?

Regarding the first, the Mets all year have played a fine fielding 1B in left field, while the current 1B is a 1B/DH only, in a year with no DH. Which is why the fine fielding 1B plays LF instead.

So, is a trade Pittsburgh CF Bryan Reynolds for “faltering face of the franchise” Pete Alonso (except for a fine Sunday), or perhaps Dandy Dom Smith, possible?

Heresy? Nah.

Actually, the Mets I’d think would perhaps have to add a top prospect to that trade in order to get Reynolds.

Reynolds after all is hitting .310 with 15 HR, 46 RBI, and a .936 OPS.

In 963 career at bats, a dandy .289 with 38 HRs and 133 RBIs.

That works for me.

Pete could go head off to be Ralph Kiner II in Pittsburgh.

Many, of course, may disagree.

Deals they NEED to make?

Trade for the best pitching you can find for the rotation, unless by the end of the ASB, Carrasco looks close to ready (and ready to return by late July) and Thor looks to be closer to a mid-August return than September.

(Can Carrasco “return” if he’s never pitched here? I digress.  I do that.)

Trade for Minny’s Berrios?  Get it done.  Why wait? Do it now. Before some other team in the NL East does.

Also, if the offense continues to score at a rate that will have them finish the season 350 runs behind the Springer-less Astros, see about a shake-up trade at the deadline.

So what do you suggest?

Time for you to wheel and deal.

  1. I don't know how they're going to improve if they don't take some chances in trades. While trading away Pete Alonso is not the foremost priority they should have, they certainly should be open to hearing what he would net in return. Yes, he could prove to be Ralph Kiner or he could prove to be Dave Kingman. It's not that Kingman was awful but he was not All Star material given his high strikeout totals and bad batting average. If you are given someone to address the OF dilemma and allow Smith to move to his natural position of 1B, I'd have to consider it. Furthermore, if the offer is for Smith, I'd have to consider that, too.

  2. Rees, I agree. Maybe the 20 runs in 3 Yankee games is a sign, but this team needs to hit a LOT better to win the division. Very fortunate so far.

I am not that familiar with Bryan Reynolds, although Pittsburgh is about to play the Mets 7 straight days. But his stats are impressive. It will be a good chance to check him out.

  3. I have a feeling that we will not be signing conforto
So I think we should consider trading him at the dead line. We should trade him to a contender and acquire assets that could be used to acquire what we need like a starter or OF

Conforto will not be traded to a team like Pittsburgh but I hope this front office can be very creative and dynamic

  4. Eddie, this trade deadline could rival 2015’s. Cohen wants to win. He will do what he has to.

  5. Gosh it is hard to imagine a team in first place having had Maybin, Lee, and Almora combine for 5 for 86, 1 RBI, 38 Ks .

Cast off Lagares has 22 RBIs.

  7. I'd like to see another starting pitcher acquired at this trade deadline. There are only 5 or 6 teams from which it is realistic to think they could get someone that could help. My top four picks are Berrios from Minnesota, Marquez from Colorado, Gibson from Texas and Duffy from Kansas City.

The only one of the four that would be a 'half-year rental' is Duffy. He could probably cost the least. Texas, Minnesota, and Colorado would want more prospects for their top pitchers that each have at least one year remaining before free agency.

With that all said, I would be willing to trade one of Mauricio or Vientos, and nobody else in the top 10 list. My personal favorite trade would be McNeil and Vientos to the Rockies for Marquez and Tapia.

It is possible that Texas would let Gibson go for a little bit lighter package, and if they could pry both Duffy and Merrifield from KC (for the same return), I'd jump on that one, but Merrifield has one more year before FA for an extremely affordable price. It would not be easy to talk the Royals into parting with him.

The other cost consideration is how many teams are going to be in the market for starting pitching. There seemingly will be quite a few which will just drive prices up.

  8. Remember 1969, the deal deadline is getting closer by the day - and unless the Mets go on a major run, they will want to make a high impact move - maybe one of yours

  9. Let me repeat myself. Trade Smith before Alonso. We need right hand bats.

  10. Here is the problem with the your trade Alonso to Pittsburgh logic. We are no longer in the Ralph Kiner reserve clause era, where Alonso is going to be in PNC Park for years to come. If Pete has even a 40-homer year (he's on a pace for 30 right now, which could start to pick up), he's going to get a big number in arbitration. That means the Pirates will dump his salary.

Now, what team would be willing to take on salary for the right player, and just watched Pete make their ballpark look small? You probably guessed it.

As a Mets fan, there would be nothing worse than watching Alonso sock 40-50 homers a year for the Yankees, and share the "face of the franchise" with Judge.

As I see it, Pete/Dom and Lindor have two of the four infield positions locked up. For second base and Third base, you currently have:

    Jeff McNeil
    J.D. Davis
    Jonathan Villar
    Jose Peraza
    Luis Guillorme.

Seems like a bit of a log jam once Davis returns, doesn't it? Trading McNeil for Donaldson doesn't resolve it, either. Probably two of these guys gotta go.

  11. Bob W, astute observations.

I do think Bryan Reynolds has the same years in as Pete, and he will pose the same salary problem for the Pittsburgers (which taste great with Swiss).

Alonso on the Yanks? Perish the thought.

  12. Somehow, Brian Reynolds on the Yanks doesn't worry me as much as Pete Alonso on the Yanks. Or the Phillies, Nats or Braves for that matter.

  13. Bob W sometimes a team does need to go into "Prevent" mode - like Wheeler to Phillies and Murphy to Nats....good point.

Larger point is - moves-wise, they need to do what it takes to win this division, because the Wild Cards are being dealt out west this year.

Maybe the moves are simply - getting Carrasco and Thor back healthy. If both came back strong, what a shot in the arm that would be.
