Born on this date:
- Mackey Sasser (1962)
- Kevin Elster (1964)
- Travis Blankenhorn (1996)
- Bob Murphy (2004)
New York Mets signed free agent Lee Mazzilli on August 3, 1986.
1962 | With his sixth home run in three consecutive games, Frank Thomas ties a National League record when he goes deep off Cincinnati's Joey Jay in the bottom of the seventh inning of a Mets 8-6 loss at the Polo Grounds. The right-handed slugger, who equaled the mark with a pair of round-trippers in each game, will add another homer to his club leading total in tomorrow's contest. |
1987 | After his ejection in the bottom of the 12th inning for arguing a close call at first base, the Columbia Mets manager Butch Hobson yanks the bag out of the ground and brings it into the clubhouse in protest. The bounced skipper is convinced to return the base to the field because the team has only one set of bases, but not before he sprays it bright orange to make the bag easier to see for the umpire. |
1995 | Making his first start for the Rockies since being acquired from the Mets, Brett Saberhagen gives up 13 hits and walks three batters, but gets the win in the team's 9-4 win over the Dodgers. The sellout crowd gives their new hurler an enthusiastic standing ovation when he departs the game with one out in the seventh inning. |
2015 | Mike Hessman breaks the minor league home run record with the 433rd round-tripper of his nearly 19-year career, a grand slam against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the Mudhens' 10-8 extra-inning International League (AAA) loss at Toledo's Fifth Third Field. The 37 year-old first baseman, who played parts of five seasons with the Braves, Tigers, and Mets, surpasses Buzz Arlett, who established the mark in 1936 while playing for the Minneapolis Millers. |

Also at Mack's Mets:
All season long, I've felt that this team was on the verge of collapse.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet, somehow, amazingly, they've won tough games and played .500 ball.
I think they can still do that, but I don't know that they've got more than that in them.
The Braves and Phillies got better at the deadline and the Mets did not to improve two glaring areas: pitching and the need for a RH-hitting outfielder.
Conforto has killed them all year long. And Pillar has not played well -- and swings at everything. It's maddening.
Not a bad team, just not a real good not one.
Not without Jake.
Dom with a .711 OPS doesn't cut in the corner outfield.
Feels more and more like this team needs a makeover.
I didn't understand the Baez trade, but though I guess they felt a need to do "something." It just didn't address need. A significant failure at the deadline.
At the same time, I am very relieved they didn't move Mauricio and Ginn, which is what any kind of major deal would have required.
Oh, and Kumar sure feels like another Sandy screw up. Why is he even around?
All that said: This team has surprised me, and earned my respect, all season long. I'm not saying they can't do it.
When the injuries first hit us hard -- was it May -- I think Mack said that the club needs to play .500 ball and hang in there. That's still the goal.
But somebody in this division is going to have THREE GOOD WEEKS. That's all it's going to take.
It's still unreal that we didn't address pitching -- at all.
If I were gambling today, I would not beat on the Mets to win the division.
But you never know!
Jimmy
Jimmy - I am not betting on the Mets either. They needed a Right hand hitting outfielder all along yet, instead of George Springer they get Lindor when they had 2 SS. Now, they get another infielder - this was hits lefties but Ks A Lot.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the plan Sandy? Cause what you are doing does not make sense.
How is Kumar "another Sandy screw-up"? Should Sandy have known in advance what the results of the physical would be?
ReplyDeleteHad he signed him after what the results showed, knowing he was damaged goods, THAT would have been a screw up.
As is, we get #11 next year, so it's not all bad.
Megill made the fatal Mets' starter mistake - he made a mistake.
ReplyDeleteActually, it wasn't even a mistake, it was off the plate.
You trail by 4 in the first as a Met, game over.
Great for Palmer AND Peroza. Both heartily deserved promotions.
This team's offense does not fill me with awe, but it IS awful.
Hitters don't start hitting, this team will not remain in first place. If the hitters do, they will.
Bill - my problem with this year's draft is that they had no plan B. Just about every other team does in the draft. You select HS players that have committed to colleges in later rounds in case your top picks don't sign. Then - you $ available to sign the highly rated HS players. Mets didn't do that. They picked all under slot guys to save $ for Kumar. That's bad planning - sort of like getting an infielder when you need an outfielder as Jimmy pointed out - plus trading one of the few top OFs in the system to boot in both the Baez and Lindir trade!
ReplyDeleteWalker is tiring, really hadn't pitch significant innings in 3 years
ReplyDeleteMegil will come up on an innings limit
Thor ?
Jake?
Caracasco?
Hill 5 inning pitcher who mostly looks tired on mound
The Mets needed pitching and neglected it
I hope for best but prepare for 3rd place
Bill.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the Mets "not knowing" about Rocker's medical concerns, there was a reason why he dropped to #10. Other teams knew there was an issue with his arm after a drop in velocity.
John.
Sandy's always going to go for the big home run guy. Comes from his days with Oakland. It worked out with Cespedes in 2015. Not so much with Jay Bruce, or others. Baez was not what they needed.
Bob W
Well said Bob
