I am going to pass over any open thread on shortstop.
Third base... hmm.
Davis?
Villar?
Guillorme?
Cano?
Vientos?
Remember... Brett Baty.should be ready to take over this position in 2024, pushing Mark Vientos.to a corner outfield position.
Take it away...
Me first I guess.
ReplyDeleteI want Cano moved here for year and to work with Baty when he is ready.
Try Vientos there next year. Baty was already playing in AA thus year and doing ok. I see him starting there next year and if doing ok moved to AAA. Then he should be ready in 2023 for third.
ReplyDeleteIf we are stuck with Dontcha Know, put him at 3rd with the intent to work Vientos in by June. If Cano is hitting, he stays. If not, he leaves.
ReplyDeleteBaty? 2023. He already played some AA. He might go straight to AAA for 2022. Full season s/b plenty.
JDD gone.
If they can rid themselves of Cano, Villarreal can stay.
One big Mets team offensive difference between 2020 and putrid 2021 was the pretty lethal bat of Cano. But what is that bat after an 18 month absence, at age 39, and without PEDs? I have no idea.
Guillorme? Honestly don't know if I want him back as a utility guy. 150 plate appearances, just 5 RBIs, 13 runs? 2 for 17 with RISP? Unacceptable for a sputtering offensive team, if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer to spend more to keep a Villar and trade Luis elsewhere.
This seems to be one position where you look outside the organization. I'd like to have Matt Chapman at the right price.
ReplyDeleteBob W
I guess I think that third is the place for Robinson Cano if there cannot be another resolution to his contract (trade?).
ReplyDeleteI don't believe either Vientos or Baty is ready yet, especially defensively.
Please don't let me hear Suarez again this off season.
If Cano is somehow out of the picture, perhaps a guy like Colin Moran might be a good stop-gap for a year, although his defensive metrics are a bit weak. Chapman is a nice defensive player that would have fit into the Mets this year, with a down offensive year.
I think J.D. Davis is out in a trade. I am hoping Villar is back as a bench guy, but not the starter.
I see Villar and Guillorme as great guys to have on the bench. Villar has great speed, is a capable infielder, and is a switch hitter with some pop. Guillorme hasn't hit that well this year, but he is an excellent fielder at 2B, SS, and 3B so as a utility player he can fill in without any defensive liability.
ReplyDeleteDavis is a defensive liability at 3B and LF, so he was only a keeper when he was batting in the high 300's. That's not going to be maintained, so he will be on the trade block. Too bad we couldn't sell high on this one.
Cano should get first shot at 3B since we're going to pay him another $40M. However, if he doesn't perform then don't make two wrongs - sit him down. Villar can play there.
Baty will be the long term solution, but don't rush him up and rattle his confidence - let him develop.
