Tom Brennan - Mets' Minors Relievers Who Belong in the Top 30 Mets' Prospects

I noticed Ryley Gilliam is still in the top 30 Mets' prospects.

While he has slipped down the list and only sits at # 30, he is injured (60 day) and, above A ball in his career, has thrown 55 innings and surrendered 56 runs over the past few seasons.  Sorry - but that's Top 30?  Not in MY Top 30.

I say...bump him out of the Top 30 and let him earn his way back in.  He's not the only one:

Sherveyn Newton in 2019 and 2021 in low A ball has hit just .205/.290/.321 in 565 plate appearances in which he fanned 197 times, was 2 for 7 in steals in that stretch, and is out for the season after hurting his shoulder. That's Top 30?  Not in MY Top 30.

I say...bump him out of the Top 30 and let him earn his way back in.

Who do I add in to the prestigious Top 30, instead?

1) Brian Metoyer

He started the season a bit skaky for Brooklyn, but just for a few games.  Recently promoted to AA, the former 40th round fireballer has been in just 20 games after his 3 game struggles early on, due to injury mid-season.

But the man, whom I heard from one source is triple digits, in those 20 games, has done this:

30 innings, just 11 hits allowed, 46 Ks, 5 runs.  Wow.

Recently fanned 6 in two innings in AA.  Wow.

Top 30 results.

Over those last 30 innings, 16 walks, though.  That is actually an improvement for him, but he needs to refine that a bit more.

2) Bryce Montes de Oca

1-3, 4.50 ERA with 47 Ks in 34 innings, the 100 MPH + de Oca was drafted in 2018, but due to injury made his debut in 2021.   Control has been a real issue for de Oca, but he has shown recent improvement there.

His recent AA debut has gone great:

In his first 1.2 IP, he fanned all 5 batters who made out and walked not a one.  Just 23 hits allowed, but 27 walks and 5 HBP.

But, like I said, control has shown real signs of improvement lately.  May it continue.

Sorry - the latter two are in my Top 30.  The former two aren't.

I think this time next year, both Brian and Bryce will either be in the big leagues, or will be Top 10 Mets' prospects.

P.S.

Mets have no remotely realistic chance for playoffs.  Philly, Cincy, and San Diego, all teams they'd have to hurdle, won last night.  Mets' odds must be 1000-1 at this point.  R.I.P.

  2. Gotta have 100+ de Oca on the Blue list, Mack. Always room for one more.

When the big fireballers harness their control…

I think he tames his control issues in 2022

  3. FWIW, Sal Perez of KCR has 45 HRs. McCann has 41 RBIs. LOL.

  4. How about somebody at Mack's Mets putting up an E-O-Y
Top 30? Haven't seen one from many folks since the 2021 draft.
Sound like you already have a list in mind, Tom. Love to see it.

  5. Nickel, I will happen soon. The season ends were extended this year, so I may do it in a few weeks.
