If they think there is a good chance Thor can throw his slider and be back to normal and the only issue is if he stays healthy, yes.
If not, really think about trading Jake if some team (Dodgers?) blows the doors off. Or, even if Thor looks "all systems go", if they think Jake is now a "half the season on the DL" guy - trade him.
Then rebuild.
Stroman - why not stay here? He was good.
Megill learned tons and will do well.
Oller? A wild card. Maybe good, maybe not.
Peterson? Worth a try.
Carrasco - I did not watch him enough to asses whether he has a bounce back year in him.
Taijuan Walker should do fine - maybe Josh Walker too.
I agree with Tom Assessment except for trading DeGrom. It is too easy to forget what happened when the Mets traded Seaver. He went on to continue to be a great pitcher and we get bubkiss fir him.
In addition I think the Mets should get a descent free agent SP to replace Stroman.
Raw, only if they think his likelihood of re-injury is great and if they can get super talent for him in a trade. If they think he is healthy, I'd keep him. Unless someone was willing to trade us future All Star caliber prospects (plural).
My concern is this chronic, or old news, come spring training 2022.
I have read all the comments so far and although I understand that we need to try to do as much as possible with what we have, everyone's top 5 list was 5 righties. The only lefty starters in the Mets control right now are Rich Hill and David Peterson - both pretty low on the depth chart for good reason. The Mets need a middle-of-the rotation left-handed pitcher, and if that doesn't come from Peterson or Hill, then they're in the market. Hate to lose Stroman because he is ultra-competitive and gave us 179 innings (even when Rojas pulled him earlier than he should have). However, what we would pay him is money that is needed to get that middle-of-the order lefty. So, 1) DeGrom 2) Syndergaard 3) New lefty 4) Walker 5) Megill
Okay...
ReplyDeleteSP1-Jake
SP2 -Syndergaard
(I would offer Stro a QO but I expect him to bolt for big bucks.
SP3 -A rested Walker
SP4 - Megill
SP 5 -A healthy Peterson
Emergency SP 6 - Cookie and Oller
New money will go to 3B and OF plus extended contracts
It is hard to figure, Mack.

JT Ginn for the Mets' pennant stretch drive. LOL
No doubt, many others will start games, too.
If Rich Hill wants to stay cheap, he could help.

They cannot give Stroman a QO. He got one and accepted it in 2021. The Mets would not get a draft pick.

wow . .datsux... just typed out a long epistle on this subject and got an error when I posted it .. didn't save
ReplyDeletemy basic comment was:
ReplyDelete#1 deGrom
#2 Syndergaard - get and accept a Q.O.
#3 Carrasco - under contract and has little to no trade value
#4 Walker - Went through a tough patch in 2021, but one of the better #4 starters in the league
#5 Megill - earned the first look. Would hope he can do something about the homers, but he is tough out there.
#6 Peterson - I cannot move past the point that he was a #1 20th overall pick in the amateur draft a few years ago.
#7 Yamamoto - Had some very good re-hab starts in Syracuse down the stretch
#8 Hill - was definitely a serviceable starter after the trade. Agree with Tom that at the right price, he provides good depth and another lefty.
#9 Oller/Walker. The first call-ups.
Other: I would really like to see Stroman return, but that is doubtful. More likely if Thor does not come back.
