Davis, RHP Edwin Díaz, RHP Yennsy Díaz, INF Luis Guillorme, OF Khalil Lee, LHP Joey Lucchesi, RHP Seth Lugo, INF Ronny Mauricio, C Patrick Mazeika, INF/OF Jeff McNeil, RHP Tylor Megill, C Tomás Nido, OF Brandon Nimmo, RHP Adam Oller, LHP David Peterson, RHP Jake Reed, RHP Sean Reid-Foley, INF Dominic Smith, RHP Drew Smith, LHP Thomas Szapucki, INF Mark Vientos, RHP Trevor Williams and RHP Jordan Yamamoto.
The Mets did not tender contracts to the following players: RHP Robert Gsellman, RHP Stephen Nogosek and OF Mark Payton.
Why is Travis Blankenhorn still on the 40?
ReplyDeleteThe Mets have announced that with the non-tenders removed and four new free agents added, they will have a completed 40-man roster. There is one big discrepancy that I do not understand, and am very curious to find out what is going on: Robinson Cano is not on that list. He is under contract for 2 more years at $24M/yr.
ReplyDeletePaul,
ReplyDeleteI do not understand it either. Some have suggested that they may have requested an extension from the league before they add him back to the roster. It is possible that they are trying to work out an agreement to buy him out of the final years of his contract. I don't think we will know for sure until the lockout is over.
As I understand it, being suspended for the season includes the entirety of the baseball calendar, including the end of the year Rule 5 draft. I expect him to be added by month’s end.
ReplyDeleteAs for Blankenhorn, if I were making decisions, Luis Guillorme would begone way before Travis Blankenhorn. I recall Blakenhorn’s three-run pinch hit HR in the eighth inning of a home game to tie a game. Y’all remember Guillorme’s HR? A clutch solo job when the Mets were up 8 runs. A Duda special! Plus, Guillorme really struggles at third base, and his nickname should be Fragile. I had high hopes for him, but they’re somewhat dashed.
Gus,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the explanation about when Cano will need to be added. Many people are confused about this one.
Since no player transactions will be able to be completed during the lockout/CBA expiration, it is possible he won't be added until that is all settled.
The Braves non-tendered Johan Camargo. Not sure what he has left in the tank, but its gotta be better than Travis Blankenhorn.
ReplyDeleteLots of big non-tenders yesterday. A lot will have to sign minor league deals.
ReplyDeleteLet's go shopping!
ReplyDeleteTexasGus, thanks for the info on Cano. I was very curious about the implications of not seeing him on the roster and wondered if there was some type of deferral deal being worked. Looks like it is more likely just business as usual. However, when they do add him, somebody has to drop off the 40-man roster.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Blankenhorn discussion, I guess I see Guillorme differently. To me he is a very versatile infielder that can play any position and turns two very skillfully from 2B. He comes at an attractive price tag of $750k. Yes, he had 3 errors at 3B this year in limited chances, but he has a lifetime fielding percentage of .971. Our new guy Escobar can play any position, has a lifetime fielding percentage of .976, and costs $10M/yr. Travis Blankenhorn has fared much worse in the infield, with a .778 at second base and .786 lifetime. He only costs slightly less than Guillorme assuming he makes the MLB min salary of around $570k. I think Guillorme is a better value play as a backup, but still happy to have Escobar's bat on the team.
Very good points Paul. For now there is room for both, and Guillorme has minor league options.
