Collier comes packed into a physical frame with big strength in his lower half and core. Collier reclassified from the 2023 class into this years class and because of it will be one of the youngest draft-eligible players in July. In fact, he'll be just 17 years old and 7 months on draft day. In 2020, third baseman Blaze Jordan took a similar route. Collier is one of the smoothest players you'll find in the class. At the plate, it's effortless and fluid with an all-fields approach and big pull-side power. Collier has a bat path that big league scouts drool over. He doesn't sell out for loft and instead generates his power inducing backspin on the baseball and driving through pitches in the zone. On the dirt, Collier is certainly destined for third base where his plus arm soft hands project well for the position. Collier is a below average runner, though his money will be made with the bat and with his throwing arm.

Collier, whose father Lou appeared in parts of eight big-league seasons, was originally slated for the 2023 draft. He obtained his GED and opted instead for junior college, thereby allowing him to reclassify for this summer's class. Collier just celebrated his 17th birthday in November, making him one of the youngest players in the pool. Scouts consider him to have a smooth left-handed swing with an advanced feel for the barrel and promising strength; inversely, they are concerned his frame might already be maxed out. Defensively, he has a strong arm and he ought to remain at third base. Model-based teams tend to view extreme youth bullishly, and that could play into Collier's favor provided he terrorizes junior college pitching throughout the spring.

15. Padres — Cam Collier, 3B, Chipola (Fla.) JC
Scout’s take: I was thinking Susac here, but they have some catching depth. San Diego likes the high ceiling, young athletes with loud tools. They have some young infielders and outfielders in their system that can really hit, but they also need some arms to go with those guys. Perhaps Whisenhunt here? Collier feels more like a Padres pick. Collier has the pedigree and is the youngest hitter in the draft. His strong lower half gives him present strength and he still has room to fill out up top which is why I think he will hit for plus power, matching the plus hit tool. His future plus arm will fit well at third base.
Carlos’ take: I agree, this does feel like a Padres pick. For our purposes, Collier may as well qualify as a toolsy high school hitter and San Diego doesn’t bat an eye when it comes to high-risk, high-reward preps. Collier homered in his first juco game with Chipola this spring (or winter?) and through eight games is hitting .250/.406/.500 with a pair of home runs, six strikeouts and six walks.

Good, short clip from Cayden here. Cam Collier's homer yesterday was on a pitch at the knees. Now we see hard contact on a fastball up. That plate coverage was on display all summer/fall.

Hot take: Termarr Johnson probably has the more potential for explosive pull power, but I can't see how the hit tool grades can be far apart. Collier is hardly a slapper. Good value at #11 or #14, and a steal any lower than that.

The son of former big leaguer Lou Collier, Cam is one of the youngest players in the 2022 class and was originally a member of the 2023 group. Collier was a Georgia high school product, but he’ll play this spring at Chipola (Fla.) JC where his youth will stand out even more. There hasn’t been a first-round junior college hitter since Tim Anderson was selected with the 17th pick in 2013, but Collier has the talent to join that club—which also includes Cory Spangenberg, Bryce Harper, Lonnie Chisenhall and Nick Markakis this century. Collier has strength and athleticism in a strong, physically mature 6-foot-1, 219-pound frame. He’s shown solid bat-to-ball ability and a swing geared for line drives to both sides of the field, and impressive raw power that plays to the left-center gap. Scouts think he has a chance to grow into above-average power with above-average hitting ability as well. Collier has a wide, crouched and open setup with a low handset, and at times will let his loose and quick hands take over in the swing, slapping the ball the other way rather than getting his lower half fully involved. He has a chance to stick at the hot corner with above-average arm strength and solid actions. There’s a split in the industry on his defensive profile, as those high on him think he can be an above-average defender at third, while those more skeptical wonder if he’ll move to first base in the long run. Collier is committed to Louisville and will be one of the more interesting storylines in the draft class given his age and juco status.

After going heavy on college bats the prior two years, President of Baseball Ops Farhan Zaidi and Scouting Director Michael Holmes flipped the script in '21 by taking Mississippi State righty Will Bednar in round 1. We've seen how important that kind of adaptability is to this front office at both the amateur and professional level with their "no stone unturned" methodology. That makes Cam Collier a perfect candidate for the Giants here as the final pick of the 1st round. It's a unique profile as Collier not only reclassified from the 2023 draft class, but also decided to start his college career early with Chipola College at the JUCO level. One of the youngest players in the class, Collier has a smooth and low effort swing, knows his zone, and takes mature at bats. He projects well at the plate and should hit for enough power to fit at third base with the reactions and plus arm that are needed defensively as well. This type of profile would be a bit different for Zaidi and Co. but maybe doing things differently is what we should start expecting from the Giants organization.
