Mack - Mock Draft v.3.0 - Pick 1.5 - 3B Cade Doughty

 Cage Doughty

3B     6-1     195     LSU

2021 LSU stat line - 58-G, 227-AB, .308/.368/.546, 13-HR, 32-K

Yeah, I tend to think Cade Doughty is a ton of 50 grades, which isn't a bad thing at all. But a late 1st/early day 2 type. Despite the HRs, Doughty doesn't have a history of hitting the ball really hard. A Ty France of sorts.

LSU 3B Cade Doughty is having an absolutely mammoth weekend. Maine cannot get him out.

He's now 8 for 14 with 2 HR, 3 2B, 12 RBI, SB, BB, K. He's crossed home plate 7 times for the Tigers.

Cade Doughty thankful to play at LSU

Doughty has been an impact player since his first year at LSU in 2020. In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Doughty hit .278 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 54 at-bats in 16 games.

Last year, Doughty thrived in an entire season of play. He posted a .308 batting average with 11 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 55 RBIs in 227 at-bats in 58 games.

Doughty is a 6-foot-1, 205-pound infielder who is a well-rounded player known primarily for his offensive potential. The right-handed hitter has a solid approach and uses a short and compact swing to drive the ball to all fields. He has the potential to hit for average and power in pro ball.

Defensively, Doughty has experience playing second base, shortstop and third base. He profiles best at second and third base due to his athleticism, range, and respectable arm strength.

42 Cade Doughty

Louisiana State 3B

Notes:

Ht: 6-1 | Wt: 195 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Tigers '19 (39)

Age At Draft: 21.3

Doughty was a well-rounded, gamer-type player coming out of high school and has been a solid performer in two seasons with Louisiana State, hitting .302/.368/.520 for his career, with 13 home runs and 11 doubles last spring. Doughty will expand the zone more often than he should, but his contact ability is such that he hasn’t been punished for that with high strikeout totals—he has a career 12.4% strikeout rate with LSU. He’s played mostly second and third base in the SEC and has more than enough arm strength for second and can capably handle either position.

47 Cade Doughty 3B LSU

Denham Springs, LA

Doughty is a professional through and through. He gets extremely high marks for his leadership in and out of the clubhouse, and performs on the biggest stages to back up his reputation. Doughty has an extremely mature, advanced approach at the plate with solid plate discipline. It's solid average raw power that he's tapping into in-game. Doughty's swing can get long on slower breaking balls, but he does a great job not giving away at-bats and limiting strikeouts. This is a pretty polished hitter profile with the potential for a 50 hit/50 power run producer at the next level if he continues to develop.

CADE DOUGHTY, LSU

Defensively, Doughty is an asset. He’s got really good hands, a quick transfer, and a strong arm with plenty of carry across the diamond. He rounds through the baseball nicely and comfortably projects an above average defender or better at the next level. The only time Doughty can get in trouble is when his throws sail a bit, but even those are few and far between. If Doughty’s bat takes another step in 2022 and he starts hitting the ball with a little more authority, he’s got the blueprint of a day one pick.

Cade Doughty skill set and swing reminds me of Jonathan India. I'd think he's got the leg up on Berry as just more of an all-around athlete if one was betting on who goes earlier it the draft were today.

29. Tampa Bay Rays: Cade Doughty, 3B, LSU

A one-time second baseman, Doughty was moved to third in 2020 and it fit him well. His barrel always finds the baseball, and his right-handed stroke is smooth. He’s also got a plus arm in the field.

3B Cade Doughty, Louisiana State.

Bat: R. Throw: R. 6'1", 195 lbs. Born 3/26/2001. Hometown: Denham Springs, LA.

2021: 13 HR, .308/.368/.546, 1 SB, 32/22 K/BB in 58 games.

Cade Doughty does not have the loudest tools in the SEC, and certainly does not compare favorably to the other names on this impressive list when it comes to power, speed, or overall athleticism. However, the kid is somewhat reminiscent of another former LSU Tiger, Daniel Cabrera, in that he can just flat out play baseball. I actually like Doughty significantly more than I liked Cabrera, and I (like many others) am enamored enough with his natural feel for the game to rank him high on this list. Doughty was a highly regarded recruit coming out of the Baton Rouge-area high school ranks and I liked him then as well, and all he's done since then is just hit and hit and hit. Doughty is a very professional hitter that makes a ton of contact from the right side, consistently going with the pitch and working an all fields approach. With a bat path that is naturally long through the hitting zone, he has some margin for error on pitches he mistimes. Not just a slappy gap to gap hitter, he has plenty of leverage in his 6'1" frame and taps into above average power both to his pull side and the opposite field. The end product is a very well-rounded bat that has a chance to produce 15-20 home runs annually in the majors while posting relatively high on-base percentages, and I have a feeling he's going to end up closer to his ceiling than his floor. In 2022, he might want to get a bit more selective to try to draw a few more walks, as he tends to make contact early in the count and walked in just 8.5% of his plate appearances last year. He also provides value on defense, with good range and instincts in the infield and an above average arm that would make him a net-positive defender at either second or third base.

Three LSU players have been named to the D1Baseball.com Top 100 College Prospects List for the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft.

LSU infielder Jacob Berry is No. 1 on the list; infielder Cade Doughty is No. 19; and right-handed pitcher Eric Reyzelman is No. 86.

Doughty, a product of Denham Springs, La., batted .308 (70-for-227) for LSU in 2021 with 11 doubles, two triples, 13 homers, 55 RBI and 41 runs scored. He was 5-for-18 in the NCAA Eugene Regional with two doubles, one RBI and four runs , including 3-for-4 in the regional championship game win over Oregon with two doubles and two runs scored.

Doughty led LSU to a crucial series win at Texas A&M May 20-22, batting .333 (5-for-15) with one double, one homer, six RBI and three runs scored. In the Tigers’ Game 2 win over the Aggies, Doughty doubled, homered and collected five RBI. His two-out, three-run homer in the fifth inning erased a 6-3 deficit and the game remained tied at 6-6 until the top of the 13th, when Doughty’s two-run double highlighted a six-run outburst in the 12-6 LSU victory that clinched a berth in the SEC Tournament.

13. Cade Doughty, 3B, Louisiana State

Doughty could become the fourth player to go from Denham Springs (La.) High to college to the first round, following Ben McDonald, Russ Johnson and Travis Swaggerty. He moved from second base in 2020 to third base this spring, when he hit .308/.368/.546 with 13 homers. He makes hard contact to all fields with a quick, compact right-handed stroke and has the agility and plus arm to play a solid third base.

Impressive freshman campaign manning the hot corner for the Tigers. Good defensive actions at third base, figures to comfortably stick on the dirt. Receives high marks for leadership.

  1. Cade is currently destroying the ⚾️ being thrown at him.

He could easily pass Termarr Johnson as the top infielder picked in this draft and could go as high as 1.2

  2. has he leap-frogged Berry? I thought Berry was generally thought to be higher?
