SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse Mets dropped their season opener, 5-0, to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A New York Yankees) at NBT Bank Stadium on Tuesday night. An announced crowd of 6,572 fans enjoyed the game in front of sunny skies and 60-degree temperatures at first pitch.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (1-0) jumped ahead early and never looked back, plating two runs in the first and three runs in the eighth to lead wire-to-wire. Power for the RailRiders highlighted the night, as Oswald Peraza smacked a solo home run in the first and Estevan Florial smashed a three-run dinger in the eighth to put the game away. Four of the RailRiders’ eight hits on the night were extra-base hits.
Four different Syracuse (0-1) pitchers appeared on Tuesday night, highlighted by outings from starting pitcher Thomas Szapucki and the first man out of the bullpen, Rob Zastryzny. Szapucki settled down after allowing two runs in the first, going three total innings in his start with four strikeouts and zero walks. He only allowed one hit in his final two innings of work. Zastryzny tossed three shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit and three total baserunners. He induced two ground-ball double plays in his strong appearance out of the bullpen.
Cody Bohanek had a two-hit night at the plate for the Mets, smacking a double in the third and following it up with a single in the sixth. The Illinois native is returning to Syracuse, having played 34 games with the Triple-A Mets during the 2022 season.
Syracuse and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre return to action on Wednesday. Left-hander Mike Montgomery will be on the for the Mets against RHP Hayden Wesneski for the RailRiders. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am very disappointed with this roster. I thought over the off season this team had a chance to be competitive if constructed properly. The roster that the put together is a lot of the same Mets who have disappointed year after year. Matt Reynolds, Bohanek, Fargas and the starting pitching is terrible. I thought we were going to have a great starting pitching at AAA this year. Pederson, Megill, Walker, Szapucki.
In addition what happened to the missing names from the roster. Orze, Holderman, Harold Gonzalez?
Good questions.
ReplyDeleteKey members of this team are currently members of the parent m team's taxi squad or part of their rotation.
As for Harol, that is a mystery to me.
And btw... as much as I touted him for years, Szapucki doesn't have it anymore. Velo down. Needs to go to the pen
Raw, Orze and Holderman pitched in the Mets' final spring game yesterday. Holderman recorded 14 of his 20 spring outs by strikeout. He is throwing in the high 90s now after getting healthy and changing his delivery. He had rocky moments, but hopefully a few months in AAA and he will be cooking.
ReplyDeleteOrze did not seem ready for MLB bats. I hope he figures it out and can help the Queens team in 2022.
Mack, another MIA is Ryley Gilliam.
One guy who might show up in Queens when needed is Josh Walker, a lefty who had a nice 2021 and 4 innings of 1 run ball this spring. Maybe he'll be another David Peterson, although picked (I believe) 36 rounds lower.
Looks like Megill will get rained out tomorrow.
DeleteNo open date so might see first opening day doubleheader in quite awhile.
Assume Peterson and Williams are traveling with doubt about current rotation health
Wow - just saw that Jordan Yamamoto was designated for assignment yesterday.
ReplyDeleteGilliam is not listed on AAA or AA roster.
I am surprised that Quinn Brodey, who had a really tough season last year, is in AAA while Jake Mangum is in AA. Brodey in last night's opener was 0 for 3 and 3 Ks.
Someone will pick up Moto.
DeleteIs Gilliam on AA roster?
Assume holding Magnum back so he can get more at bats
Why does the outfield include Fargas, Rincon and Brodey when Mangum looked better last year. The infield does not look exciting with the like of Bohanek, Manny Rodrigues, Matt Reynolds. The only exciting ball player at AAA is Vientos, maybe Lee and Plummer.
ReplyDeleteThey are going with Mike Montgomery today on the mound. The last time I saw him I thought he was a reliever. The next day they have TBD.
Who are the Mets starters at AAA as of now?
1. My guess is Jake was held back in Birmingham so he can play every day.
ReplyDelete2. The Syracuse rotation has been disturbed because projected members like Megill, Williams, and Peterson are either on the Mets roster or their taxi squad because of the injury and innings concern of Jake, Max Walker, and Cookie.
I looked at hourly DC weather - game has 4 o'clock start, but but 5, supposed to lighten, and by 7 PM, cloudy. Will they wait and try, or reschedule? Opening day raw weather is not fun.
ReplyDeleteThey said they are having a "rescheduling problem"... don't know that comes in play this early against a team you are going to play 800.times.
