28. Astros — Connor Prielipp, LHP, Alabama

Carlos’ Take: Part of me feels like this spot is too low for Prielipp, considering his handedness and the stuff he showed when healthy. Another part of me realizes he hasn't pitched since May of 2021 and understands how uneasy that makes scouts. Unlike other injured college arms like Sims and Peyton Pallette, Prielipp has a chance to throw before the draft and give teams some confidence in the stuff he is showing.

15. Connor Prielipp, LHP, Alabama

It's a testament to the potency of Prielipp's stuff (particularly his low-to-mid-90s fastball and swing-and-miss slider) and modern medicine's efficacy that he's expected to go in the first round despite throwing only 28 collegiate innings. He was limited to 21 frames in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the world. He then threw seven innings last year before his elbow popped and he required Tommy John surgery. Teams have grown more comfortable drafting rehabbing pitchers in recent years, including Cal Quantrill, J.T. Ginn, and, last year alone, Gunnar Hoglund and Jaden Hill. Barring a setback during his rehab process, Prielipp should soon join the club.

20. Braves — Connor Prielipp, LHP, Alabama

Carlos’ take: It’s hard to have any confidence in where Prielipp will land at this point and I am not sure how much clarity we will get this spring with him not pitching in games after having Tommy John surgery. If he were healthy, there’s no chance we’d be talking about him this far down the board. His stuff all seems electric and his performance is top-notch. The lack of innings (just 28 with Alabama) and health question marks make this one tricky.

Scout’s take: Will we see Prielipp pitch before the draft? That’s the concern with Rocker as well. Hopefully, Prielipp returns with the same plus fastball, plus-plus slider selections. The Braves continue their run on college pitching here. This makes four lefthanded pitchers in this first round in the last five picks. Wow.

Commit/Drafted: Red Sox '19 (37)

Age At Draft: 21.5

If Prielipp were healthy, there’s a chance he could rank as the top overall player in the 2022 class. Prior to an elbow injury that ended his season in 2021 and required Tommy John surgery, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound lefthander was nothing short of dominant for Alabama. He pitched just four times as a freshman in 2020 before Covid ended the season and just once in 2021 before being shut down but owns a career 0.96 ERA in 28 innings and has outstanding strikeout (15.1 K/9) and walk (2.3 BB/9) numbers. When healthy he’s thrown a 91-93 mph fastball that touches 95-96 and a devastating slider in the mid 80s that has generated whiffs 50% of the time, per Synergy. He’s also racked up whiffs (42%) with a low-80s changeup, though that pitch has been thrown much less frequently than his fastball/slider combination. Prielipp’s injury and lack of track record in college will make him a bit of a conundrum for teams this spring, but his rehab has reportedly gone well, and he should have a chance to throw bullpens and potentially pitch in summer leagues before the draft.

After dazzling in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Prielipp entered 2021 as a must-watch arm for the 2022 class. Unfortunately, Prielipp was forced to undergo Tommy John Surgery in May 2021. He had added 25 pounds of muscle during quarantine, which led to his fastball velocity sitting at 93-96, topping out at 97 before the injury. His slider is firm and sat 88-90 MPH with late break and there's a developing change-up in the mid-80's that has promise. Prielipp gets especially high marks for his command of the baseball as well. Scouts won't be afraid to take a chance on this elite-level lefty in July. It's the same narrative as Jaden Hill from 2021, though Prielipp comes at hitters from the left side with better command and more intriguing pitch metrics. It's not out of the question for the lanky Alabama product to be the first college lefty off the board.

Bat: L. Throw: L. 6'2", 205 lbs. Born 1/10/2001. Hometown: Tomah, WI.

2021: 1-1, 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 12/1 K/BB in 7 IP.

Connor Prielipp is somewhat of the mystery man in this conference. He began his college career perhaps as well as you could possibly expect, tossing 26 shutout innings with 43 strikeouts, six walks, and just nine hits allowed in five non-conference starts against Northeastern, UNLV, Harvard, Lipscomb, and McNeese State. The first four came in the shortened 2020 season, while the McNeese State start ended up being his only start of the 2021 season as his elbow gave out on him. He came back for two much less effective relief appearances against Auburn and LSU in mid-April and mid-May, respectively (2 IP, 3 ER, 4 K), but went down with Tommy John surgery and will likely miss the 2022 season as well. It's not often that an injured pitcher with just 28 collegiate innings to his name can make a first round push, especially when they were not a highly regarded recruit, but Prielipp really is special. His fastball sits in the low to mid 90's and has been up to 97, velocity he has maintained throughout his handful of starts. His slider is a plus pitch with late bite, darting under bats at the last second, and his changeup is an above average pitch in its own right. With a simple, easy delivery, the 6'2" lefty commands his pitches well and has all of the traits you look for in a frontline starting pitcher, and if he hadn't gotten hurt he may very well be the number one player on this list. However, the fact that we haven't seen how he handles a larger workload is important, as he'll be asked to throw roughly seven times his career high in innings in a big league rotation, and for that reason you can't project him as a starter with as much certainty as a guy like Peyton Pallette. Prielipp's five starts have also come against weaker competition, with the two worst innings of his career being the only two he threw against SEC teams (albeit while hurt). On talent alone, he might be the best in the conference, so his low ranking on this list is really just a byproduct of the depth of the conference combined with the unfortunate fact that we just won't have seen him pitch in a very long time come draft day.

17. Connor Prielipp, LHP, Alabama

Prielipp's situation is analogous to that of Cal Quantrill, who sat out the 2016 season at Stanford following elbow reconstruction but still went No. 8 overall in that Draft to the Padres. Prielipp sports a 0.96 ERA with a 47/7 K/BB ratio in 28 college innings, showing the ability to pound the zone and miss bats with a 92- to 95-mph fastball, a short upper-80s slider and a low-80s changeup.
