Tom Brennan and Mack Ade - Mets Recap

Tonight, now-you-see-him, now-you-don't 1-0, 1.89 David Peterson takes the mound against , the Stalker, 3-1, 5.61 Alex "Corn" Cobb.  Peterson's ERA is 1/3 as high as Cobb's going in.

Would it stay that way?  Would Pete Alonso sing, "I Left the Park, in San Francisco"?

An 8 game lead coming into the series - was a double digit chasm sitting ahead just a few days away?

Interestingly, going in, the quartet of Alonso, Lindor, Marte, and McNeil had 104 combined RBIs through 43 games, a roughly 400 RBI pace from 4 guys.  Remarkable.  Then...they added a bunch more.

In the first 3 innings alone, Lindor got 2 RBIs on a pop double, and Pete Alonso then hit a pop 3 run HR.

For Lindor, he hit the 500 career RBI threshold, and Pete jumped to 40 RBIs in game 44.  Score at Mets, 5-3, after 2 1/2 innings.

What made the 5 run inning possible, though?  A slow grounder.

A SUPER hustle infield single by Brandon Nimmo that virtually no one else in baseball would have beaten out. Instead of a 3rd out and no runs, the Mets scored 5.

SIGN THE MAN!! (Next time up, ANOTHER infield hit for Nimmo).

Peterson had a great night, professional hitter JD Davis had 4 hits, Alonso (.288) had 3, Jeffie Mac and "Yes He Canha", both homered, the Mets scored 13, had 18 hits in all, and lest we forget, Colin Holderman had 2 more scoreless innings in relief, and the Mets won 13-3.

It helped that SFG is having injuries too.  Mets are excelling in spite of it all.

So, for all you "let's get rid of JDD" folks, I say to you, "come on, dude."  He's been hitting in bad luck - until tonight.  He hits!

Of course, the secret weapon last night was Patrick Mazeika, who had a hit and an RBI, and has Tomas Nido feeling like Wally Pipp.  Mazeika is a lucky charm.

Let's roll, yo.  Who needs those two Cy Young dudes, really?

ELSEWHERE

A quiet day in the minors, as Mondays these days almost always are, with zero games anywhere in minor league ball.

Quiet, that is, except for a rumor that a Francisco Alvarez promotion to AAA might not be too far off (hopefully, red hot Jake Mangum and hit machine Wyatt Young would join him).

Syracuse needs reinforcements, but then again, so does Binghamton.  What makes me say that?  Their combined .333 win-loss %, that's what.  An un-scintillating 26-52.

I think Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio both need another several weeks to go from decent to dominating in AA before getting a promotion to AAA.  No huge rush, since Mets' hitters are hitting.

Also, rumors that the Wednesday starter will be....innings eater Tom Szapucki.

May he get called up AND go 9 innings.  It would, of course, be a Giant challenge.

Brooklyn (17-19) is scoring just 3.2 runs per game.  But a few signs of bat life of late.

St Lucie has slowed a bit but is still 26-13 (.667).  26-13?  Nice.

Oh, when the Saints, Go Marching Up...to Brooklyn.  Promotions ought to be coming in June.

Well, as my dentist might say, you've been re-capped.

  1. Mangum did get promoted to Syracuse, as did Khalil Lee. Vasil and Seymour got promoted to Brooklyn, and Joel Diaz got promoted to St. Lucie. Cortes and brodie were demoted to Binghamton. A little news, at least…

Tom, the Mets had never had so much good luck before in any game I have ever seen. It sure was fun to watch even if a night game in San Francisco just feels like its always played in a morgue. That place never shows life…

  2. My thoughts

    - Today's minor league player focus is on someone you may know little about.

    Brooklyn 6-2 RHP Hunter Parsons.

Parsons was a 19th round pick in 2019, out of Maryland University, where he was a starter (2019 - 10-3, 3.45.15 starts).

The Mets converted him to a reliever. He put up decent numbers combined last year for St. Lucie and Brooklyn, but this year he is virtually hitless:

    10 games 2-0. 0.00-ERA. 16.2-IP. 21-K

Guess we should keep an eye on him this season.

    - College player focus today is on Duke freshman SS Alex Mooney.

Mooney was the top prospect.out of the state of Michigan and the.most hyped Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS player since the Mets Nick Plummer.

    This season for Duke:

    .292 .393-OBP 3HR 30RBI 12SB

    A future star.

    - St. Lucie OF Alex Ramirez ended Sunday with 10 more hits than ANYONE in the FSL.

    - St. Lucie promoted two players that pitched last season for the GCL-Mets.

RHP Joel Diaz (2021 - 50-IP, 63-K, 0.54-ERA) and LHP Javier Alencio (2021 - 2.44-ERA, 14.25 K/9 ratio) are now members of the St. Lucie Mets.

I particularly can't wait for Diaz to start.

They also shipped off two of the 2021 pitcher draft picks to Brooklyn

Mike Vasel and Carson Seymour were promoted to Brooklyn.

Vasil started 8 games for St. Lucie this season, posting 3-1, 1.80, 35-IP, 37-K.

    Seymour went 4-0, 1.19 in 7 games, 4 starts posting a 1.19-ERA

    Binghamton made some moves too.

Released was 25-yr. OF Antoine Duplantis (.132).

26-yr old OF Quinn Brody was receive from Syracuse (.152).

Also arriving from AAA is OF Carlos Cortes (.168).

Lastly, 26-yr old OF Jake Magnum has been hot lately in AA (.283) and has been promoted to AAA Syracuse.

    -Sad news.

The last surviving Mets coach from the 1969 team, Joe Pignatano, has passed.

    - The MLB has now raised C Francisco Alvarez to the 7th overall prospect.

  3. Trevor McGill is now pitching off flat surfaces.

    - Head scratcher - two things we could say about Luis Guillorme going into this game. One, he is on fire and, two, he owns the SF starter Cobb. So. He sits.

    - Have to tell ya. I was ready to mail this one in early after Frisco went up 2-0 in the second. I expected the team that led the league in wins last year, at home, to produce something like a 13-3 game.

As it came to be, they did, but not the way I thought it would go.

The Mets went on to reward Buck on his 66th birthday, 13 runs, 3-HRs, 18 hits (4 from JD), and at least one by every starter.

David Peterson settled down after those two early SF runs and produced a win and ended with a stat line of 2-0, 2.16.

    8 game lead over Phillies.

9 games over the Braves and Marlins.

    31 game stretch count:

    4 games down

    3-1

  4. Re: Peterson

A little harsh on David, Tom.

Yeah, he pitched bad in the past but that is what it is.

    The past.

  5. Gus

Nice slip in there on your comment

    Love it.

  6. Gus and Mack, they had to go and sneak all those promos in on me LOL. Always gotta check and triple check.

Man, I LIKE the demotion thing - if Cortes and Brodey aren't hitting in AAA, demote them like you did Khalil Lee - Khalil did not tear up St Lucie, but apparently he got untracked.

Duplantis shows you cannot hit .132 for long and stick around. Winaker must be worried, as his average was in the same zip code area.

I thought Mangum should have been in Syracuse right off, but he had a slow first month in AA, which had me second-guessing that opinion. But his May heat-up shows he deserves to be in AAA.

Mack, I would love to see the Mets sit Lindor for a game, to take a blow, and Luis get a game there, but he is like Pete - wants in every game as a starter.

Good to see those arms finally jumping up from the DSL.

  7. Mack, my "now you see him, now you don't" comment on Peterson was not a negative towards him - it is a negative towards the game, and how a guy pitching well all year, except for one bad minors outing, can be called up, sent down, called up, sent down. It sucks.

He deserves to be called up - and stay here. He is a major league starter. Not a minor league one. I'd like to see him stay here.

On many teams, he would have been in their major league rotation all year. Here, it took 3 guys to get hurt. But he is here now, and this time, hopefully to stay.

  8. Gus, I know Alex Cobb agrees with you. The Mets sure got breaks.

But it was Nimmo on that 2 out play with no runs in, in the 5 run inning that opened the flood gates. He was in high gear as soon as he hit the ball, and frankly, I am not sure if any other major leaguer beats that ball out. To me, that was the play of the game. I was so impressed.

He MADE the Mets' luck right there.

  9. Happy Birthday, Buck! The team gave you a gift with 13 runs, and I hope they keep giving. No better way to ride out the pitching injuries than to light up the scoreboard!

Congratulations, Jake! (Mangum that is) He got promoted to AAA and deserves it. He has speed and base-running savvy, plays a good defensive outfield, and seems to be a guy that everyone in the clubhouse likes.

Hallelujah, JD! After smashing hard-hit balls all over the field into the waiting gloves of defenders, JD Davis finally got some of those balls to fall in for hits. Now that helps your confidence.

Kudos Tom & Mack! You guys have created an awesome daily feature. I love reading the feature, and it has inspired more comments than any other posts.

    1. Thanks Paulie

(I call every Paul I know Paulie after call those mafia movies I have seen).

As for Magnum. I was very disappointed with his start though I was very happy when we drafted him and touted him as a possible leadoff defense minded centerfielder.

  10. Did you guys see that someone in the crowd was heckling McNeil right before his homerun? They were like you have no power, go work out your legs and then he hit a bomb. You can hear the heckler on the Giants broadcast. Love it.

  11. Hey u gotta love this team's all around effort and give Buck his praise but not starting Luis G. last night was puzzling and I really hope he doesn't catch TC disease with his start every over priced veteran mantra. Luis deserved to start. Otherwise I'm just loving it and hope it continues thru the next West coast trip as they have been disasters in the past. Is there any doubt we need to sign Nimmo?

  12. Better to heckle a guy that specifically AFTER he makes an out.

Nimmo is simply an asset . A winner.
