I'm glad we have Canha and Marte instead of this fella. You agree?
PREAMBLE:
This is a club where back up players usually hit like your Grandma. At least like your Grandma who couldn't hit. Some grandmas hit plenty hard, I hear.
I often cited the law firm of Almora, Maybin and Lee from last year that went something like 9 for 90. Awful stuff.
I remember in 2015, pre-Cespedes, where thru mid-July, all of the Mets' scrubs combined had several hundred at bats and were hitting around .180. Putrid stuff.
This year, though, we've got Luis Guillorme. The back up who should be starting.
Through Monday, the highly rated LG Appliance is hitting .355. Currently hotter than a firecracker. Supernova about sums it up.
Career .280+, with a .375 OBP. Excellent fielder.
Low key pro. Jeff McNeil is John McEnroe on the field - his emotions show.
Luis is Cool Hand Luke. But Clint Eastwood in the batters' box.
And some tough guys in movies flash a lot of cash. Luis flashes a lot of leather. A 2B/SS combo of Luis and Lindor is dazzling.
Central Casting has LG in the wrong role. He needs to be a lead actor.
I hear his character will go by the name Guillorme Gwynn, and his new flick, Hit Man, is coming to a theater near you.
Don't miss it.
METS: Goodness....any team that can bat Guillorme Gwynn 9th is stocked! The LG machine (.365) produced 2 more hits and 2 RBIs. Quietly excellent Mark Canha 4 hits. Jeff McNeil follows an 0 for 5 with a 3 for 4. Insiders say it's between the Squirrel and the Gwynn Clone for the NL batting title.
J Double D got two hits tonight, too. If he played more, he'd hit .300, too.
Ten Mets runs on 17 hits, and Trevor WIlliams was great over 6, and dislocated Drew Smith relocated the mound quickly and recorded 4 of his five outs via the K. Who needs Edwin Diaz when you can entrust Adonis Medina to hold a 10 run lead in the 9th? 34-17 Mets, on the 1986, 2 out of every 3, pace.
Joy in Metsville...and more butt splinters for Dom Smith (except he was sent to AAA to get some ABs), even with Nimmo the Numerator (he's Numero Uno) still sitting it out. Hard to crack into this hit machine line up, with 14 of the hits coming from guys NOT named Marte, Lindor, and Alonso. Of course, Marte cracked a 2 run shot and Lindor RBI'd for his 9th straight game, and now he is up to 42. All Star Shortstop, anyone?
Phillies are about to lose again. I pheel bad for them, don't you?
MINORS:
With the exception of Syracuse, Mets minor league teams have gone from comatose hitting to high scoring, just...like...that.
SYRACUSE:
Mark Vientos in May was .328/.408/.642 in 19 games. I'd say he is just about ready. Three singles tonight. Syracuse lost but the contagious hitting onslaught continues, 8 runs on 13 hits. Connor Grey gave up 7 hits and 3 runs, so his hot recent pitching dried up. Jake Mangum hit .360 in May. Nice.
BINGHAMTON:
No game today. Maybe rumbles of thunder scared the ponies.
BROOKLYN:
10-4 win, with both squads fanning 13 times.
Catcher Matt O'Neill was 1 for 2, 3 walks, and 4 RBIs, and JT Schwartz added 4 RBIs, as Brooklyn scored 10 runs despite just 7 hits. O'Neill has a .400 OBP this year and .405 for his career, despite a career .223 batting average. To look at it another way, he has 68 career hits - and 86 walks...there's a ratio you never see, unless it's Barry Bonds. Of course, he is not Bonds, but he's a good defensive catcher, so maybe he will make it to the Mets someday.
Zwack was good for 3 innings, and Oscar Rojas added 5 innings without an earned run, with 8 Ks.
ST LUCIE:
Moreno moves to 4-0 with a 5-2 win. Omar de los Santos hit yet another HR and double and added 3 RBIs. He's producing bigly, folks. He may be a good one. And Carlos Dominguez hit # 11 and was HBP twice, too. Can he become a Carlos Beltran or Delgado? Sure hope so.
Mack - My thoughts
- First up today is probably the last pitcher currently left on the Syracuse roster that could get a 📞 during this brutal 31 game stretch.
25-year old, part time starter, Adonis Medina.
We have seen Medina already this season. In 4 appearances for the Mets, he has gone 7.2 innings, producing a high 5.87-ERA. Still. he has pitched well upstate in 4 games, 2 starts, 0-0, 2.00, 9.1-IP, 9-K.
Medina was a 2014 international free agent that was signed and pitched throughout the Phillies chain. We picked him up in the off season.
FB: 90-94, T96 with sink. 50 grade
Slider: 78-82, good depth. 55
Change: 85-88, + movement. 60
UPDATE
Adonis was called up, replacing Dom Smith on the 26.
- We are staying with the hunt for a good 2nd round pick.
The starting third baseman for LSU in 2021 was Cade Doughty. Then, projected early first rounder Jacob Berry transferred there and a new position was needed for Doughty.
No problem for a guy that has played all three infield positions and he became the starting second baseman.
As it turns out, he profiles there best anyway
Hit 56
Power 50
Run 50
Arm 55
Field 50
2022 stats so far:
.286/.385/.536/.921, 12-HR
Me? I see Doughty as a Jeff McNeil comp who could become a premier utility player in the infield

- Guardians Baseball posted their 2nd round mock and has Stanford OF Brock Jones as the Mets pick.
Strikes out too much, but what power hitter doesn't?
I had him early on as our pick at 1.14.
Would be dancing if he fell to us here.
- RP Trey Cobb promoted to AAA Syracuse. AA ERA: 0.47
- St. Lucie sent 1B/OF Matt Winaker back to extended camp. In 26 games, just .132/.280/.222.
-Mickey Callahan was fired from the Mexican League team that he managed.
- As I'm sure you all know, Dominic Smith was sent back to Syracuse yesterday.
I know this hurts his trade value, but I totally agree this is the best move, both for Dom and the team.
I told people yesterday that he looked like a deer in headlights with a bat in his hand.
He needs to get his confidence back no matter where his future in baseball lies.
Go feast on the shitty AAA pitching, Dom.

Re: Conforto
ReplyDeleteWho's dat?
Re: Trevor Williams
ReplyDeleteI will take an outing like this from him every day of the week.
Re: Mark Vientos
ReplyDeleteA May stat.like this is why you never look at anything than what someone has done in the last 30 days.
But.
No room for him at third this year.
Re: Luis Moreno
ReplyDeleteMore on him tomorrow.
Adonis apparently nailed by a liner to the thigh. Ouch!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the Mets with a healthy Conforto rather than Marte somehow would be scoring a run less per game.
Like I said. Who?
DeleteYou cannot go there with Conforto. He was a very good player with the Mets and it is not fair to assume that he would be dragging this team down. In fact, I would argue that he is the type of hitter that would thrive in the new Mets approach to hitting as a line to line line drive hitter at his best. He fell off to some degree when he deviated from that and tried to be a pure power hitter.
ReplyDeleteI can't agree here.
DeleteMarte in right is so advanced.
Conforto was an enigma both on the field and especially.in the clubhouse
A few opinions on last night’s action.
ReplyDelete- I was excited to see Medina’s start, so I checked his profile. A 23 year old in St. Lucie with ho hum career minor league stats, at best. I know he came from another organization, so I won’t spoil the write-up for tomorrow if Mack is doing it.
- The Yankees creamed Thor to the point of five earned in 2.1 innings. I wanted to see velocity but couldn’t find it. I’ll try to remember to check Baseball Savant or Brooks Baseball later.
- I would be open to re-signing Syndergaard, if he is the old Thor.
- The one thing this team will do is make contact, and Conforto struggled with that, especially the back leg slider. That has always been his Achilles heel, but I can’t say he couldn’t improve it. Just a wonderful person who just didn’t like NYC.
- The Mets are a snowball rolling downhill. Hope they don’t hit a tree.
Re: Thor
DeleteHis ERA since saying the Mets no hitter was not a real no hitter.is 8.00+
Re: Medina
DeleteI really am not saying much about him tomorrow so please say more.
The best Mets’ hitter in 2021 was Marte…except he wasn’t a Met at the time. Little I’ve seen, better than Conforto, and he seems like a tough out every time.
ReplyDeleteConforto two outs with RISP, .212 in “late and close”, .227 vs. lefties…a very talented platoon player.
ReplyDeleteMarte .306 with 2 outs, RIPP, .295 in late and close. JUST…BETTER.
ReplyDeleteLavender and Moreno promoted to Brooklyn
ReplyDeleteHitting is contagious, and I hope Eduardo Escobar has caught the bug. He had a HR last night, and seems to be making more solid contact, even on his outs. Needs to lay off that fastball at the top of the zone and he will see more hittable pitches. But until then, I just don't know why we don't see more variety starting at 3B. Guillorme certainly deserves some starts there, and Davis is getting rusty.
ReplyDeleteGood problems to have! Keep on streaking!
If you played the hot hand, you'd need an 11-man line up right now.
ReplyDeleteI always liked Conforto and think he will excel in his next chance.
