Tom Brennan - Saturday Happenings in Metsville

Saturday Happenings in Metsville

A wonderful, glorious, chilly day in Queens. Was 54 degrees at 11 PM.

3-2 win, and the Braves lost to the hapless Cubs again, 6.5 game lead again.

Lindor 11 th HR and 2 RBIs.

Tai Walker GREAT again…5-2, 2.88.

Drew Smith GREAT again. 13th Hold.

Edwin made his save (15) interesting again

An amazing 15 Ks for the trio. Even in 2022, that’s a LOT.

Escobar hitless in his return.

Nido had a rough day…0 for 3, error, 5 steals allowed.  For those worried about Alvarez defensively, Nido  has thrown out 1 of 20 this year.

Sunday Mets sweep?

MINORS

I’ll be brief.

AAA: Nick Meyer 5 RBIs.  Cahill got smacked around. Dom Smith (1-4) singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th. Vientos walks to load the bags, up comes Daniel Palka.  Ground out force at home. Blankenhorn safe on a fielder’s (wrong) choice: 7-5. Dini walked, 8-5. Meyer 2 run double, 10-5. At this point, 10 runs on 6 hits!  A run-scoring ground out and RBI double by Cody Bohanek, 12-5. Ritter double, 13-5. Otanez gave back 3 runs. 13-8 final.

AA: Alvarez off. Ronny Mo hit his 11th. Baty 1 for 5, but hit a 3 run shot in the 8th. R-Mo singled in another in the 8th.  FORTY ONE RBI’s for Ronny.  Wow. Baty has just 19. Mitchell a 1-2-3 save.

McIlwain (.303) had 2 for 4 and a walk in his AA debut. Young and Winaker scored twice each.

Down 5-2 heading into the 8th, scored6 to take an 8-5 lead, and final score.

High A:  A SWEEP!

Game 1: Zwack tossed 6 scoreless in a 1-0 win. Rowdy Jordan (.257) had 3 hits and the game-deciding RBI. I think Zwack ought to name his first child….Mack.

Game 2: Schwarz staying hot, Gaddis a 2 run shot. Murphy hit his first. Jordan on 3 more times and swiped 2 bags and was charged with a misdemeanor LOL.  A 4-1 Bryant win (2-1), Hartwig save (5),

A:   Stanley Consuegra 3 run shot (7). And Atencio 5 IP, 4 runs, 7 Ks.  Daniel Juarez 2-0) one unearned run, 2 inherited runners scored. Askew pitched great again, fanning 4 in 1.2 IP. 20 year old SS William Lugo (.262) had a 2 run, tie breaking single, and after a bad April, has hit very well since. 7-6 final.

And…that’s all, folks.

  1. Mack Zwack

    I like it.

    He's no hack.

  2. Very true - tough name. who'd want to mess with Mack Zwack?

Mauricio must be kept, in my opinion...28 extra base hits, 11 HRs, 41 RBIs in 56 games? Those are insanely good power numbers. The one guy I would lean towards trading (if I had to right now) is Baty, not Vientos, Alvarez or Mauricio.

    1. So.

We slot in Mauricio as our future second baseman.

What do we do with our all star 🌟 playing there now?

  3. Can they try Maurcio in the OF as in why not or are they grooming him for a trade? Alvy was "rested" y/day or could it be he's on his way to the Big Apple but I know probably not but I can dream can't I? How about my 2 buddies Lindor and Diaz pretty great right! I still haven't finished eating crow but it's tasting better. My question about EE still remains as in why he's given the starting spot over LG when he's he's had 1 hot week all season and pls don't tell me he's better defensively than Luis. Happy Father Day guys!

    1. If the Mets were going to groom Mauricio as an outfielder, they already would have started doing that.

    2. I write tomorrow about the guy I wanted working with Alvy defensively in Syracuse

    3. Last time I looked LG had 6 RBIs.

  4. Another thought about Jake as in how about the BP for him? He could be more valuable there getting into more games for an inning or two and save on his arm and Diaz's but only off course if the Max attack is back.

  5. Mack, the Squirrel is a pretty solid outfielder. We can make it work. Vientos at 3rd in 2023, R-Mo at 2nd in 2024, Squirrel to outfield. I just think that Mauricio could be a real version of Darryl Strawberry. Darryl might have been a better hitter against righties, but R-Mo is a switch hitter and he will likely out hit Straw vs. lefties.

Power numbers, though, over 150 games for R-Mo? 40 doubles, 30 HRs, 115 RBIs. On a team that for most of the season, until lately, struggled offensively. He needs to get to AAA after the ASB.

  6. Escobar does have a gun for an arm. His bat has to make a comeback. Ronny Mo could play the OF or 2B. Question is, when will they do that? I think they want him strong at SS before shuttling him around.

my early season favorite and graduate from 2021 Complex Ball, Wyatt Young, has stalled a bit, but is still hitting .264 with a .338 in AA and AAA, after skipping over 2 levels entirely. He is still hitting .297 career in just 300 at bats, 2/3 of them in this his 2nd year. Still an amazing story. No one else I can remember in Mets minors history has ever pulled this off, except Ed Kranepool. Unlike Maruicio, he is not a power guy - more of a Guillorme.

  7. Jake will not want the pen - he has his opt out - he wants to be able to show he is a world class starter. Apparently, he threw 2 innings of simulated BP yesterday, a good sign.

  8. Tom, four game series with the Marlins wraps up tomorrow. I still like two way players over one dimensional guys, the offense being similar. The top trade chip will be Vientos. He is slow afoot and doesn’t have a defensive home. Seems Mauricio has never even been tried in the outfield or any other position, why would that be? Baty is a good player.

  9. What would you expect in return?

  10. Mack, Ronny won’t be ready until at least a year from now. Canna is safe.

  11. Ray, I want relief pitching back. A killer reliever, to avoid using merely OK pitchers like Nogosek and Adonis.
