Fastball, slider, cutter, changeup mix. Fastball 94-96 over extended outings, but Sproat can run it up there 97-99 over shorter appearances. It's a heavy heater with run and sink. Slider is a mid 80s, short breaker that he commands well at the bottom of the zone. Changeup is a firm, high-80s offspeed offering that is more of a ground ball pitch than a strikeout pitch right now. Sproat has sensational arm talent.
Brandon Sproat made the list at No. 98 and worked 21.2 innings during his second season with the Gators last year. He finished with a 2-1 record across 16 appearances. Prior to 2021, he pitched to a 1.50 ERA with eight strikeouts over 6.0 innings pitched as a freshman in 2020 while holding opposing hitters to a .105 batting average. Sproat also shined for the U.S. Collegiate National Team this past summer. The hard-throwing right-hander went 1-0 across four starts, finishing with a 2.00 ERA after allowing just five hits in nine innings pitched.

Florida's Brandon Sproat might have the strongest arm in the entire conference, but he has a 5.53 ERA and a 26/18 strikeout to walk ratio over just 27.2 innings because he's struggled to throw strikes. His fastball sits in the mid 90's and can touch 99 in relief, while his above average slider provides an out pitch. To this point, he looks like a reliever because of that below average command and the lack of a reliable changeup, but there are no glaring issues in his delivery and more consistent innings in 2022 might help him pull it together enough to earn a shot as a starter.

19. Brandon Sproat, RHP, Florida
Sproat had a 1.50 ERA in the small sample that was the shortened 2020 season, but he wasn’t able to back that performance up as a second-year pitcher at Florida. He had a 6.65 ERA in 21.2 innings with nearly as many walks (15) as strikeouts (18). He was much better, however, over the summer with the CNT, giving up five hits and two runs with eight strikeouts in nine innings, including three hitless innings against the Olympic team.
Stuff is not a concern with Sproat. His fastball touched 100 in the spring, and in his three-inning outing against the Olympians, the pitch sat in the mid-to-high 90s. His changeup was also a weapon in 2021, with a greater than 40% whiff rate. He needs to refine his command, but his premium stuff is enough to offer plenty of promise for the future.
Read this…he seemed to really get it together this spring: “He went 5-0 with a 1.59 ERA and .218 opponent batting average in his last six starts of the season while totaling nine quality starts including five in a row to conclude the year.”
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering why they didn't pick Hubbart who went to Cincy four picks later
