LAKELAND, Fla. (August 21, 2022) – The St. Lucie Mets snapped their four-game losing streak to the Lakeland Flying Tigers with an 8-4 win in the series finale on Sunday at Joker Marchant Stadium.
The Mets wrapped up their 12-game, 13-day road trip with a 6-6 record. The trip featured a four-game winning streak and a four-game losing streak.
On Sunday the Mets offense came to life with three home runs. Chase Estep hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Joe Miller before the Mets made an out.
The Flying Tigers scored the next three runs to take a 3-2 lead, but Tanner Murphy tied the game in the fourth inning with a leadoff home run.
The next two batters reached on an error and single. Brad Malm then singled to bring home Raul Beracierta for a 4-3 lead.
Justin Guerrera came up next and smashed a three-run homer to put the Mets up 7-3. It was the 10th homer of the season for Guerrera. He became the sixth St. Lucie Met this season to hit double digit home runs.
The Flying Tigers scored a run on an infield hit in the fifth inning but the Mets got that run back on a RBI double by Estep in the seventh to go up 8-4.
New York Mets pitcher Joey Lucchesi (Tommy John surgery) made his first rehab start. He tossed the first inning and gave up one unearned run. He allowed one hit (a leadoff double), walked one, struck out one and picked off a runner. Lucchesi threw 16 pitches and 10 for strikes.
Joel Diaz (3-1) pitched the next five innings to get the win. He scattered four hits and gave up three runs (two earned). Diaz walked three and struck out five.
Raimon Gomez pitched shutout ball over the final three innings to collect his third save.
Estep, Murphy, Malm and Eduardo Salazar had two hits apiece. It was the first game of the series that the Mets had multiple players with two hits in a game.
The Mets (66-47, 26-22) are off on Monday. They start a six-game series against the Palm Beach Cardinals on Tuesday at Clover Park. The Mets and Cardinals are tied for first place in the FSL East second half with 18 games to go in the regular season. First pitch on Tuesday in 6:10 p.m.
