Juan Vargas, RHP, Kennesaw, Ga.

Class of 2023 | PG Rank: 500

Team Elite/ Atlanta Braves Scout Team

Vargas has been a mainstay for Team Elite throughout the summer with his ability to pitch in all types of situations out of the pen. He is averaging two strikeouts per inning with his increased fastball velocity up to 92 mph and has only allowed nine hits over his 20 1/3 innings of work this summer. The 6-foot-1, 176-pound Vargas is making the jump on the hill and is an integral part of the Team Elite staff.

Brock Wilken

Wake Forest

Wilken is a middle-of-the-order power bat with an advanced approach. He had huge freshman season in both ACC and Cape Cod League play. His raw power is prodigious, and his batting practice displays frequently contain balls hit hard in a way that no one else on the field can replicate. Swing and miss is in Wilken's profile, particularly with off-speed stuff away, but he has a good eye and possesses a selective approach befitting of a man that abhors striking out. Wilken really limits his strikeouts and fights deep into at-bats to ensure such an outcome. At third base, Wilken has solid enough hands and reacts well to batted balls, but isn't very rangy due to below average foot speed. The big plus here is a rocket arm, and that helps mitigate skepticism about him sticking at third as a pro.

46 SS

George Lombard Jr.

Gulliver Prep, Miami, FL

Lombard possesses just about every tool a team could ask for in a prep prospect. There's a hit tool here, significant power in a long, athletic frame, and a the ability to really run the bases with present above average speed. He's a pretty big kid, so his future may ultimately be at second base or left field; his arm strength and throwing motion adding to that notion. Regardless, this is one of the premium bats available on the prep side in the 2023 class with a definitive chance of going on day one.

5. Cincinnati Reds

Chase Dollander, RHP, Tennessee

Not only is Dollander the cream of the crop in terms of college pitching this spring, he’s a metric-darling with unicorn traits that can be extremely tough to find. He checks a lot of boxes. Projection, production, performance and unique data. Dollander has a shot at becoming a frontline starter at the next level with an upper-90s fastball and a plus to double-plus slider. He mixes in an above average changeup that has been un-hittable for lefty bats. If he can repeat his 2022 in the SEC next season, he’s got 1.1 upside.
