The best power bat in this year’s draft class is Brock Wilken. Wilken is a third baseman from Wake Forest University. Wilken has been a great hitter throughout college, slashing .275/.363/.609 with 40 home runs. He’s absolutely ripped the cover off the ball with a .334 isolated slugging percentage and a pace of 47 home runs every 600 plate appearances. He also has a healthy 11.4% walk rate. The downside? He has a career 21.4% K-rate and struck out in 24.2% of his plate appearances last season. 

Wilken’s glove at third base is fringy, though he has a powerful arm. The red flags are there, but so are the signs of potential. FanGraphs projects him to grow into 80-raw power eventually. Though how good his power will play will likely depend on if he can cut down on the K’s. If Wilken could improve in the strikeout department, he may go within the first five selections.

ECB/ Padres Scout Team 

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound backstop with solid receiving skills and arm strength behind the plate. Secondary right-handed pitcher that runs the fastball up to 89 mph. Cable would be solid addition with the athleticism and versatility to fill several roles at the next level for a number of Division I programs.

Jake Gelof

Virginia

Gelof has been an anchor for Virginia, just as his brother was. And it's been right from the get-go. It's plus power from the right side with an affinity to use the whole field. Scouts actually like Jake's swing more than they did his brother's, and that's saying something. He's a fringy runner, but he plays a strong third base and projects to stick there at the next level. An aggressive hitter, scouts would like to see Gelof up his walks a bit in 2023 as he figures to get less and less pitches to hit as teams figure to pitch around him.

9. Will Sanders, RHP, South Carolina

Scouts liked Sanders' projection when he was a Georgia high schooler, and he since has improved his fastball to 92-94 mph with a high of 96, refined a quality mid-80s changeup with fade and tightened his slider into a mid-80s weapon. He went 7-3 with a 3.43 ERA and a 91/31 K/BB ratio in 89 1/3 innings in the spring.

7. Washington Nationals

Jacob Wilson, Infield, Grand Canyon 

If the Athletics are disappointed with the No. 6 overall pick, the Nationals would be downright upset over this outcome. The three-worst teams each have an 81 percent chance of landing a pick in the top six. Getting the seventh pick would sting. Still, a lot of good players in this class and Wilson is one of them. The Nationals are absolutely loaded and Wilson would be the cherry on top. This is probably the best hit tool in the class with absurd contact rates and fringy power that he gets to with an efficient swing plane. Wilson has a shot to play shortstop, but could shift to left field or second base as a pro. An infield featuring Wilson, Brady House and CJ Abrams would be awfully fun.
