While everyone is anxious to issue grades and evaluations for how the Mets did during this 2022 season, the issue that really must be examined more closely is how the ownership and front office did to prepare the Mets to ascend to the postseason.
During the first full off season the front office had to make some significant changes if they were indeed really going to make a movement into October baseball within the first five years of Cohen ownership. Step number one was filling in the gaps to obtain some high quality ballplayers via trade and free agency.
Step two was allowing Sandy Alderson to concentrate more on the business of baseball and allow someone else to take over roster construction and salary negotiation. Step three was getting the roster to perform at its optimum. Step four was addressing the needs that arose due to slumps or injuries that could curtail the team from progressing.
Well, on the roster part I think most people would take off their caps and salute what was done in the 2021-2022 off season. The Mets felt they needed starting pitching to supplement the existing trio of Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker and Carlos Carrasco.
Ignoring temporarily the output of the returning three starters, instead focus on the overall output of the two newcomers. Multi Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer did miss significant time with injury, but you can't argue over what he did on the mound overall. He finished 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA, a WHIP of 0.908 and strikeout to walk ratio of 7.21. Wow, you really can't ask any more than that other than ongoing health.
Chris Bassitt may not have been a household name in New York, but his recent work in Oakland showed a pitcher with a winning record and a 3.44 ERA. With the Mets he went 15-9 with a 3.42 ERA, 1.145 WHIP and a 3.21 strikeout to walk ratio. Considering the price to get him were prospects J.T. Ginn and Adam Oller.
To supplement the bullpen the big acquisition was Adam Ottavino who had traveled around a bit from team to team, and had already proved himself on the big stage across town in the Bronx. For the Mets he was indispensable, going 6-3 in 66 games with a 2.03 ERA. He helped complement Seth Lugo, Drew Smith, Trevor May, Trevor Williams, others and otherworldly Edwin Diaz.
So overall the grade for the front office in the preseason was most decidedly in an "A" for effort and execution. Billy Eppler and Steve Cohen jointly get credit for identifying the quality players to bring to New York and then paying handsomely for them. We'll continue the rest of the evaluation next week.
The FO did so much right - but the Ruf deal, to me, made their grade drop to a B+. That was a major mistake.
ReplyDeleteI think Eppler tried to outdo the Braves with his last minute additions at the deadline.
ReplyDeleteIt worked for the Braves in 2021.
Nuf said.
The platoon bats deadline absolutely flopped in embarrassing fashion. Curious what they do now. Do they try to save face and not DFA Ruf, hoping he adjusts? Vogelbach contract is so cheap it's too enticing not to bring him back. Naquin has to be a no.
ReplyDeleteI applaud the work done last year and during this season by the front office. The team has made huge strides from where they were. Sure, I'm disappointed in the season end but there is much more to come. Looking forward to seeing how they deal with the large free agent load this off-season.
ReplyDeleteCan someone whisper in Vogy's ear and tell him he might be a better player if he lost say 100 lbs or so and wonder if it was brought up to him. Eppler did a great job except for the 21/22 deadline deals which were disastrous. When your building a win now team you must go "All-in" because 2 other players we could have had cost us as well. They chose McCann (it's hard to believe he is that bad) over Realmuto and could have signed Schwarber. Now I know they wouldn't have done both deals but one would have done it. I was blown away last night when I heard on SNY the proposed deal for Jake is 5 years @ 43 million per year...THATS INSANE. Your thought's gentleman.
ReplyDeleteI agree Gary. MAX 3 yrs
DeleteI'd give Jake that money, if he insured his contract for missed time, with the Met as beneficiary - but that isn't happening. How about $50 million a year for 2 seasons?
ReplyDeleteGary, if I was Vogelbach, I'd do it. His weight will quickly become career-ending. Maybe he cant lose 100 but 50 pounds seems doable and realistic.
Reese’s article clearly points to the off season, and I agree that the Mets aced it. As for Vogey, losing the massive uppercut would help. As for Ruf, hard question to answer. If Jake can’t get his contract insured, no one will give it to him; this is a business and since Jake plays hardball, he should expect one in the ribs unless Buck Showalter is running negotiations. Nice piece Reese.
ReplyDeleteI'd do whatever I could to retain Jake. Don't forget, the front office never adequately addressed lack of lefty relievers.
ReplyDeleteRay, I thought Joely was a big disappointment - when he pitched, his stuff looked good the few times I watched him. Yet it is results that count.
ReplyDeleteGus, my issue with Ruf is a decline in 2022 at 36, next year he turns 37 during the season. I expect Ruf 2023 to be equal to Cano 2022. Move on. Either Vientos in his spot, or get an inexpensive righty bat that works. Heck I still think Jake Mangum could fill the Ruf spot in 2023.
My choice:
Delete3B - Escobar/Guillorme
DH - Vientos/Baty
Look to me there's no way he keeps throwing at 100mph for much longer and he wasn't even getting it done at those speeds and he's a 5/6 inning pitcher so there has to be a better way to spend 40 to 50mil a year. I'm going for Swanson and Rodon and by the way Tom Lenny Harris could fill Ruf's spot and he's 57. The Phils had the right idea: lay in the weeds and let us and Atlanta fight down to the wire and then step up and beat the Bravos not just yet but almost.
ReplyDeleteMack I like 1b Alonso 2b Swanson SS Lindor 3b EE/Baty LF McNeil CF Mangum RF Marte C Alvy/Nido and DH EE/Bay/Vientos. Pitching we start with Max and Rodon and have to sign Diaz and the rest I'll leave up to you guys to fill in as I'm still working on it.
ReplyDeleteThey came to final weekend needing 2 of 3 with DeGrom and Max headling…but… and then they get to 2 of 3 WC, with Max and Jake headlining again….but…. If you can get to either one of those scenarios, I think the FO has at least met minimum and it was player performance that fell down.
ReplyDeleteWeird year. Mets out, Braves out, Dodgers out, Yanks on ropes…and the championship series are yet to start. SMH.
