This year’s draft class is position player-heavy. Of FanGraphs’ top 10 ranked 2023 draft prospects, seven are position players, and only three are pitchers. Most are college players, but Walker Jenkins is the top high school player on FanGraphs’ list.
An outfielder from South Brunswick High School, Jenkins is praised for his mechanics, including his smooth swing, strong hands, and ability to spray the ball all over the field. Jenkins projects to have plus power, which should play up because of his ability to hit. He also is an above-average runner with a strong arm. His athleticism should keep him in center field. Jenkins is currently committed to North Carolina. Overall, Jenkins is a very well-rounded player.

Pushing Clark from the #2 and #3 spots are a pair of run-producing sluggers with elite hit/power tools. OF Walker Jenkins (South Brunswick HS, NC), a North Carolina recruit, brings similar energy to the diamond where he carries a blue-collar approach on both sides of the ball.
Perhaps the most imposing presence in the class at a square-shouldered, 6-foot-3, 210-pounds, the left-handed hitter commands each of his at-bats where a heavy barrel is delivered more often than not. His power potential, and present ability to cover the plate, is coveted by professional clubs, and his makeup is equally as impressive.

6. Oakland Athletics
Walker Jenkins, Outfield, South Brunswick
Oakland would see this a tough blow considering they have as good as shot as any team to land the No. 1 overall pick, but them’s the breaks, man. The Athletics probably end up taking the best player on the board here regardless of position or age considering the current stage in their rebuild. Jenkins might have the most impactful bat of any prep in the 2023 draft with plus power and a plus hit tool.
He’s had some bumps and bruises and a balky hip in recent years, so proving his durability will be an emphasis this spring. Should he play hitch and hiccup-free, Jenkins is a darkhorse to go No. 1 overall as he’s looked like a bluechip, organization-changer when healthy.

2. Walker Jenkins, OF, South Brunswick HS (N.C.)
Jenkins’ summer was upended by a hamate injury, and he tried to rush back for Team USA trials, leading to a less than optimal performance. Scouts expect to see his plus bat and innate knack for finding the barrel on display once healthy in the spring.

5. Walker Jenkins, OF, South Brunswick HS (Oak Island, NC)
Jenkins can hit liners for incredible velocities. He's got ridiculous power and he hasn't come close to reaching his ceiling. He's another guy teams will have to be patient on but he'll be worth it.

6. Walker Jenkins
Outfield, South Brunswick
Jenkins is long, lean, athletic, and projectable at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, showcasing some of the best bat speed and power in the class. He’s an easy above-average runner at present with a huge arm that will play at any outfield spot. He's performed at every stop along the amateur circuit and earned a spot on Team USA 18u as an underclassman.
This is one of the premier bats in the 2023 class, even if he does physically mature into a corner role when it's all said and done. We’re talking about a an impact bat that should hit for average and power, akin to the likes of Riley Greene in his hay-day.

5. Pirates: Walker Jenkins, OF, South Brunswick High School (Oak Island, N.C.)
Like Max Clark, Jenkins didn’t set the PDP League on fire, but he showed an ability to barrel up the baseball and registered some high exit velos as well. He has the chance to hit, and with a ton of power. Look for him and Clark to get locked in as the summer continues.

Walker Jenkins is a 2023 OF/SS with a 6-2 190 lb. frame from Oak Island, NC who attends South Brunswick. Huge projection in the tall build, wide shoulders and strength in the lower half. Ran a 6.75 in the sixty yard dash. A primary outfielder, aggressive routes to the ball with quick feet and a powerful back side to produce big arm strength/carry, accurate to the bases too.
A left-handed hitter, balanced and slightly open base. First pitch home run and did not stop. Anchors the back leg well and drives the lower half to create easy and loose barrel speed. Lots of length through contact helping with natural back spin. Premium athlete with highest level upside.

Right now, the consensus of opinion is that four of the top six picks in this draft will be outfielders.
In any draft without Dylan Crews and Max Clark in it, Jenkins would be the top OF pick.
Walker Jenkins looks attractive, too bad he’ll be gone by our pick.
ReplyDeleteHe sadly will, but there will still be some great RHSP on the board when we pick at 1.32
