The great baseball prospect site, Perfect Game, posted on November 13th their first mock draft for the first round of the 2023 draft.
Their choice for the Mets was:
New York Mets | Charlee Soto, RHP, Reborn Christian Academy (Fla.)
Soto has all the traits you’re looking for in a prep arm: athleticism, quality mechanics, and power stuff. Not to mention the right-hander is also one of the youngest players in the class. It is an extremely high-upside profile with a fastball that works into the upper-90s to go along with a potential plus slider and above-average changeup.

27 RHP
Charlee Soto
Reborn Christian
Soto brings a lot of intrigue to the table. He's been up to 98 MPH on the heater, sitting 92-96 MPH with late running life to the pitch. He's got a short biting slider in the mid-80's that he's primarily utilized against righties to garner chases and a tumbling change-up in the same velocity band that he can command away from lefties regularly.
He can get a bit erratic with his strike-throwing at times, but there's a ton of upside to unlock here, plus he'll be one of the youngest players in this draft class.

CHARLEE SOTO RHP / SS / REBORN CHRISTIAN ACADEMY, FL / 2023
Rankings STATERANK: 5 / POS: 1 OVERALLRANK: 27 / POS: 6
Last September, Soto was a wiry-athletic, uncommitted shortstop who hopped on the mound at the PBR Cup and showcased a short, quick arm with 87-89 fastballs. Fast forward a year, and the Central Florida recruit is quickly rocketing up draft boards with a fastball that sizzles through the zone at a heavy 93-96 with a tunneled slider at 80-84 and feel for a changeup at 83-85.
His emergence in prospect-dense Florida boosts the class even more, and he still shows signs of rising to new heights.

19. San Diego Padres
Charlee Soto, RHP, Reborn Christian
The Padres and limitless upside guys seem like a match made in heaven. Soto might have the most impressive arm talent in the 2023 class, up to 97 with elite athleticism. He features a plus changeup and a slider that is rapidly becoming a weapon. Soto also checks the model box, being just 17 years old on draft day. This pairing feels like a slam dunk.

11. Charlee Soto, RHP, Reborn Christian HS (Fla.)
Soto checks off a lot of boxes, from his 6-foot-5 athletic frame to his stuff to the fact he’ll still be 17 at next year’s Draft. His fastball is already 94-98 mph with glimpses of excellent command. He’ll flash a plus slider and a very good splitter he calls a changeup.

Soto is an interesting choice.
I would be very happy if he became a Met.
Definitely would be the type of arm I would love
ReplyDeleteDidn’t see height because I like 6’3 -6’5 pitchers
Eddie
I agree with your call on Soto. Hope his arm holds up.
ReplyDeleteCharlee is 6-5
ReplyDeleteSoto is a legit late round pick and would be a welcomed addition to a system in need of more young starters
