1-4-23 - Cameron Johnson boasts big-time potential

LHP Cameron Johnson is a 6-foot-5, 243-pound left-handed pitcher with an overpowering fastball and slider combination. He also occasionally throws a changeup from his deceptive delivery.

His four-seam fastball is his best pitch. It is an above-average offering in the mid-90s that touches 97 mph. His fastball features natural movement with arm-side run and sink, generating plenty of swings and misses.

Johnson’s changeup is also a quality pitch that is a weapon against left-handed and right-handed hitters. He has confidence throwing it in any count. The sweeping-breaking pitch displays a lot of movement and serves as an out pitch.

19. Cameron Johnson, LHP, IMG Academy (FL) – A 6’5” lefty coming from a very low 3/4 arm slot with real stuff is always worth getting excited about! A fastball that sits 91-95 but has run up to 97 with good horizontal late movement. He has a very good change that sits between 84-88 with dip and run that will keep the righties honest and get swings and misses.

The breaking ball is the big questions at this point as it looks a lot like a slider in shape with two plane movement and some late tilt, but it isn’t sharp nor is it big currently and is best described as slurvy. I have seen it down to 75 and up 82, so it really is stuck between a slider and curve, either making them two distinct pitches or choosing one version and perfecting it will be needed to put Johnson over the top as a future rotation piece.

#50 Cameron Johnson

LHP, IMG Academy (FL)

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 50

Johnson spent his first three years of high school playing for Bishop McNamara in Maryland, but has moved to Florida to attend IMG Academy for his senior season, looking for a bigger challenge and more exposure. He got more of both over the summer, looking very good early on, but tiring a bit at the end.

There are three things Johnson has going for him right out of the gate: his size (he’s 6-foot-5), his pure stuff and his left-handedness. Especially at early events, like the PDP League, the MLB Develops and Breakthrough Series alum looked like one of the best prep southpaws in the class, featuring a high-spin fastball that was consistently up to 95-96 mph that missed a good number of bats.

His upper-70s slider was also nasty at the start of the summer, an upper-70s breaking ball that was a true out pitch. He mixed in the occasional changeup, but that’s clearly his third offering.

Coming from a three-quarter slot, Johnson provides an uncomfortable at-bat, though as the summer wore on and he showed fatigue, his velocity dropped, as did the sharpness of his stuff. He’ll need to work on that, as well as his overall command. But the LSU recruit definitely has some exciting ingredients that a season at IMG could help him use more consistently.

12-5-22 - Perfect Game Scout @PG_Scouting

LSU commit Cam Johnson has been up to 97 from the left side & spins SLs over 2800 RPMs… threw 16 innings, had 33 Ks & only let up 4 hits across PG events in 2022

9-9-22 - 2023 OVERALL RANKINGS UPDATE

https://www.prepbaseballreport.com/news/PBR/2023-Overall-Rankings-Update-7531924608?s=03

LHP Cameron Johnson (IMG Academy, FL), an LSU recruit, has shown nothing but swing-and-miss stuff against the top hitters in the country. An imposing 6-foot-5 230-pound southpaw, he is relaxed under the limelight which allows his explosive stuff to shine.

Vicious on left-handed hitters from a whippy, low ¾ slot with a mid 90s fastball that features heavier arm side life, Johnson attacks the zone with a whiff-happy fastball. His enticing upside is only enhanced by a sweeping slider (77-79) that he demonstrates some ability to manipulate, and developing feel for a low 80s changeup.

There is some funk to the delivery with the ball jumping a bit at the plate, and the crude swings that are given only help in highlighting his frontline profile.

14. Cameron Johnson, LHP, Bishop McNamara HS (Md.)

Johnson is a big left-hander with a high-spin fastball that can sit in the mid-90s and is tough to pick up. He complements it with a nasty upper-70s slider that has missed a ridiculous amount of bats all summer, and he’ll show the makings of a solid changeup. He’ll be pitching for Team USA.

Cameron Johnson

IMG Academy, Upper Marlboro, MD

Johnson is a big, projection lefty up to 94 with plenty of arm-side run and sink coming out of a deceptive, low slot. He's begun spinning a better breaking ball of late, a weapon against both-handed hitters. Scouts are split on whether he'll be able to start at the next level, but this is an out-getter with a big, strong, projection frame that could throw pretty hard as he gets more and more comfortable on the bump.
