If you’re somebody like me who marvels at Daulton Varsho’s blazing the trail for catchers that also man other defensive positions on the diamond, get a load of Carrigg. A switch hitter that can play any position up the middle, the sophomore out of SDSU oozes versatility, although he’s far from a glove-only player. After a perfectly adequate freshman season, Carrigg broke out to the tune of a .388/.426/.509 slash line while swiping 19 bags in 54 games. While there isn’t much power to speak of in his profile—he’s homered just five times in 91 collegiate games—he’s proven his bat can hang with the best of ‘em as he hit .329 through 41 games in the Cape Cod League this past summer.

The backup catcher is also the best player on this roster, and that is junior Cole Carrigg. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound switch-hitter was recruited as a catcher but in a testament to his premium athleticism, he was the everyday shortstop in 2022. It was a dominant season for Carrigg (.388/.426/.509, 19 stolen bases) and he earned first team All-MWC honors. He followed that up by finishing third in the Cape Cod League in hitting (.329) last summer, and Carrigg is currently listed at No. 51 on the D1Baseball.com 2023 MLB Draft College Prospects list. Carrigg will begin the year in center field, but his positional versatility gives Martinez a plethora of options.

Carigg is a versatile defender that should stick in center field. It’s more of a line-drive-oriented swing that doesn’t produce enough exit velocity at present but Houston does well with this type of profile.

Cole Carrigg, SS/3B/OF, San Diego State – Carrigg has played double-digit games at second, third, short, and centerfield in his career thus far in his career for San Diego State, while also seeing time in left, on the mound, and even behind the plate. He is best suited for center long term where he has the potential to be a plus outfielder with a quality arm. At the plate he is a contact hitter where he has hit nearly .350 in his career thus far and is a threat to steal on the bases. He does not have much in terms of power currently, but the body certainly suggests there could be double digit home run potential eventually.

Carrigg is no stranger to high-level performance, as his showing in the Cape Cod League was awfully impressive. It’s a pretty solid profile with tools across the board. Switch hitter with real fast hands and a fluid stroke that projects as a pretty above-average hit tool. He’s a versatile defender at 6-foot-3 that can play nearly anywhere on the dirt and looked comfortable handling second base as a rangy defender, though he can get behind the dish and hold his own behind there. His blend of speed and athleticism also shows on the basepaths, stealing 19 bags last season. It’s a solid floor with good amounts of upside in the stick. My gut says Carrigg will be a pretty safe pick in the first three rounds come next July.

Carrigg is an impact hitter with significant bat to ball skills, a potential future plus hitter with some impact in the profile on the base paths as well. Most believe Carrigg will grow off of the shortstop position, likely into third base or the outfield, but the bat is the selling tool here. Some evaluators have even opined a future behind the plate is possible He could end up being a .285 hitter with double-digit steal upside, limiting strikeouts and growing into some power along the way, though that's not a part of his game presently.

Cole Carrigg has developed into a do-it-all player in his first two years at San Diego State University.
As Carrigg enters his junior season this spring, he is receiving interest in anticipation of the 2023 MLB draft. Scouts project Carrigg as a potential first-round pick. He has the chance to be San Diego State’s first first-round draft pick since Stephen Strasburg went first overall in 2009.
Carrigg is a well-round player who can do it all on the diamond. The 6-foot-2, 202-pound switch-hitter has quality bat-to-ball skills and a line-drive approach. He doesn’t strike out frequently. He also possesses plenty of speed and can steal double-digit bases.
Defensively, Carrigg has experience playing virtually every position. He was a catcher and shortstop at Turlock (Calif.) High School, splitting time at each position with 2020 first-round pick Tyler Soderstrom. In college, Carrigg has played second base, shortstop, third base and outfield while also pitching 7 1/3 innings between San Diego State and the Cape Cod League.
