Tom Brennan - Ronny Mauricio's Really Big Year; International; Spring Training; Offense

Ronny Mauricio - Ed Delany pic

Ahh, prospect progress.  Nuthin' like it.

In 2021, Ronny Mauricio was 20 and did the following, mostly in A ball Brooklyn:

108 games, 20 HRs, 64 RBIs.

Not bad.  The 20 HRs by the way were a big step up from the 4 HRs he hit as a gangly 160 pound 18 year old in his prior pre-COVID season in 2019.

In 2022, though, as a 21 year old, the now-muscular Mauricio played 169 games between AA and Licey in the Latin Ball leagues of winter:

41 doubles, 31 HRs, 30 swipes, 120 RBIs, .270.

Huge progress - and no longer gangly, now at a listed, 6'3", 223 pounds.

He still did not manage to make the MLB Top 100, somehow. Methinks this is a careless oversight.

How much Ronny Mo progress will we see in 2023?

And where will it be?  Only you, the reader, truly knows.

International Signing Season Starts Today:

I am not up on this subject, hopefully they do as well as they did with the Francisco Alvarez, Andres Gimenez and Ronny Mauricio picks.

A Fansided writer suggests filthy RHP fireballer Jun-Seok Shim, a6’4” 215-pounder out of Korea as a primary target, but let's see who they get.  As the saying goes, slightly modified, you can never have enough filthy Korean fireballers.

Considering the trio of players above that the Mets got recently via international signings, this non-draft pool of talent can really have an impact.  Last year, the big name was Simon Juan, who flashed some skills in the DSL, including speed, but did not hit well.

When Spring Training Really Starts

Not when the Grapefruit League games start...not on the official date when players are to arrive by.

Nope, it is the first date the early arrivals start getting into preparations.

Which is what, 3 weeks away?  Can't wait.

Enough Offense?

Without Correa, some baseball article that caught my eye for a nanosecond or two ranked the Mets' offense as just 6th best.

A little more offense would be nice - it always is.

  3. Grand scheme of things I wonder what if any impact winter ball will have on Mauricio. Is he now back to being a highly ranked prospect who jumps back ahead of everyone except Alvarez?

  7. Besides Ronny last game (0-5) showing him at .250, can’t find his playoff stats, Bill.

  8. Bill found this article which mentions Ronny, and you seemingly can subscribe to it to watch the finals, which they are now in.

  9. So Ronny has not played 169 games. With the playoffs, it might be more like 185 games.

  10. 0-11 in his last 3 games have hurt his BA. I wonder if that 250 is for the season, including playoffs, or if it's playoffs only.
