1-31-23 - Keep an Eye on This Texas Longhorns Pitcher, Potential MLB Draft Pick in 2023
Pitcher Tanner Witt has shown a great amount of promise in his first two seasons with the Longhorns, but tore his UCL in 2022, and is coming off Tommy John Surgery.
If Witt is able to return to what he was prior to his injury, he could be a high pick in the 2023 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Tanner Witt is the son of a first round Draft pick and former MLB first baseman Kevin Witt. He throws high velocity. He won both of his starts in 2022, logging a 1.64 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 11 innings pitched. He pitched solely out of the Longhorns bullpen in his freshman season in 2021, posting a 3.16 ERA and 73 strikeouts over 57 innings.
Witt was recently named to the All-Big 12 Preseason Team. In what will hopefully be his first full season as a starter, Witt has the potential to shine.

In 2022, Witt missed most of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. I am going to be looking at how he bounces back from said surgery. What kind of force he can be for the Longhorns and just exactly how he is used as a pitcher? Will he just get a couple inning starts or will the Longhorns throw him in all the way? Or will he come out of the bullpen?

The Cardinals decide to go with the college pitcher here and this 6-5, 215-pound righty shows a four pitch mix with a mid 90’s fastball. He should pitch some in 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

20. Toronto Blue Jays: Tanner Witt, RHP, Texas
I’m always leery about putting pitchers who are recovering from TJ in my first round mock drafts. But I really, really like what Tanner Witt brings to the table. He’s a fun pitcher to watch. He can touch 99 with a snap dragon curveball. He should add some fire power for the Longhorns, probably in August. It’s going to be hard to keep him in my first round as the season goes, but for now I have to give Witt some love.

Witt just straight up looks like Tyler Glasnow and he should be available to potentially throw some innings in August recovering from TJ. Witt can touch 99 with a banger CB. It’s a premium body too. The Rays will have fun with this one.

9. Tanner Witt, RHP, Texas – After undergoing TJ after just two starts in 2022, it is unlikely we see Witt until the second half of 2023, but the stuff is real! He has a fastball that sat 89-92 in his final start before the surgery, but has been up as high as 97 and typically sits 91-94. He has a 1-7 big breaking curve I put a plus grade on a season ago and a filthy change that runs with late dip. The arm slot is a good, extended ¾ with balance throughout the delivery and repeatable. I have put high floor grades on Longhorn starters each of the previous two years in Ty Madden and Pete Hansen, Witt makes it a third year in a row I will be doing that.

Witt has the prototypical size scouts want to see, as well as the huge stuff to go along with it. A premier prospect since his high school days, Witt is a good athlete who some felt truly had a future at third base with big power potential. He's a good runner considering his size and the body moves free and fluid. The projection here is massive. Witt's arsenal starts with the fastball that's been up to 96, though it sits in the low-to-mid 90s for now. It's a super-vertical four-seamer with top-of-the-scale riding characteristics, albeit the effectiveness diminished a bit by Witt's nearly 7-foot release height. His 12-6 bender is his best secondary with big spin rates and above average velocity, though he's yet to show a strong feel for throwing the pitch for strikes and doesn't induce a whole bunch of swing-and-miss on it yet. Witt has a bit of a "show me" delivery with a double hand-break move that, if eliminated and brought into the body, could help produce more deception and whiffs on his FB/CB tunnel. Witt is as good a bet as anyone to see a massive jump in stuff and production over the course of 2022 and 2023.

The top pitcher in this year’s draft is Tanner Witt. Witt is a right-hander for The University of Texas Austin. Witt has not pitched much in college, tossing a total of 68 innings, but being quite effective. Witt has a 2.91 ERA, 30.9% K-rate, 9.9% walk rate, and .79 HR/9. Witt was slated to work out of the Longhorns’ rotation this year after serving as their closer in 2021 but was limited to just two starts and 11 innings. His fastball, curveball, and change-up look like reliable offerings, though his command can sometimes get shaky.

While the current college pitching crop is much healthier than a 2022 group that was riddled by injuries, Witt is the exception after requiring Tommy John surgery following two starts as a sophomore. He still could join his dad Kevin as a rare father-son duo of first-round picks if he regains 91-97 mph fastball with run and carry and upper-70s downer curveball when he returns in the second half of the upcoming season.

It’s unlikely Witt will pitch for the Longhorns in 2022, but it might not matter. He was fantastic in 2022 before going down with a torn UCL and undergoing Tommy John. Witt has been up to 99 with a massive curveball and a fringier changeup. He’s got a big, long, premium body with a lot of projection ahead of him.
