Tom Brennan - A Tip of the Spring Cap to the Neophytes

I love guppies that make me say, O MY!!!

We all know our top prospect hitters and how they are doing.

Mauricio, Baty, and Ronny Mo great, Alvarez sputtering a bit.

But what about other hitting neophytes?

Well, one guy who had a solid year in St Lucie and Brooklyn last year, young William Lugo, as I noted many times in 2022, singles and HOMERS in his only 2 official spring at bats. Sweet. I guess he figures the Mets always need a Lugo on their 26 man roster.

Jett Williams, with just a handful of 2022 pro at bats under his belt, is 1 for1, a double. Nice.

Ditto Rhylan Thomas, also 1 for 1.

Luke Ritter? A HR and an HBP in 3 plate appearances. Maybe 2023 is his year.

Kevin Parada? 1 for 6, and a walk. Keep plugging. The future is golden.

Matt Winaker? Tough 2022, but he is 2 for 4, with a fence-clearing blast.

And Golden Lad Alex Ramirez is 4 for 16(!) and a walk. That many ABs shows a whole lotta love.

And Mr. On Base, Wyatt Young, is 1 for 3.

Nice going, you young guys.

Even a few DSL-only teenagers (Juan, Baez, and Fanas) have gotten in games, but are a combined 0-3 with 3Ks.

Spring training is just plain fun.

Only puzzler for me is no Jose Peroza and no Junior Tilien as of yet.

VIENTOS VAH VAH VOOM!

11 for 33, 5 extra base hits, 9 RBIs?  I dunno, Marky V seems 100% ready to me.  Not 99%...100%.

  1. Vientos is a keeper.

  2. He has earned his way on the roster, unless he goes frigid, Ray.

  3. At this point in ST, I would have to say that Mark Vientos should have the inside track on the RH hitting platoon of DH in the starting lineup. It’s not “ROUGH” to see Vientos as the man!

  4. Roy, when you hit 2 HRs in a game that travel a total of 900 feet, and it's not in Colorado, you have to say, "WHOA!"

  5. It’s the fittest half of STwith the WBC let’s see how he does in the second half with a few less Double A pitchers.

  6. Mauricio hit his 4th.

    Kelenic 10 for 23, 4 HRs?

  7. Mark Vientos is taking full advantage of the opportunity he got this spring. I hope he gets his shot when they break camp.

  8. I like what we've seen of the kids so far, but I've learned over the past 100 years that I've been watching the game that the first half stats of ST mean nothing, especially for those who've played Winter ball and have a "head start" on others.

Also, with regulars playing only a few innings or even having days off, the opposition is far from ML- quality.

When we get to the final 2 weeks, ML position players are in their final tune-ups, and each team's rotations have elevated pitch counts in their final 2 or 2 starts. before OD.

I'm keeping my usual enthusiastic optimism for the season, but not ready to make decisions on kids who are basically facing other kids so far.

  9. Mauricio and de Oca for Kelenic?

  10. I'd rather get a colonic than take back Kelenic. (Well, that's not true)
