Nolan Schanuel
OF FAU
3-3-23 - Keith Law’s MLB Draft 2023 Rankings: -
#23 Nolan Schanuel, 1B/OF, Florida Atlantic
Schanuel starts with his hands ridiculously high — like, how is that even comfortable? — but he gets ready on time and has a very quick bat that produces a lot of high-quality contact. He rarely strikes out, 7.9 percent last year and 7.3 percent so far this spring, with above-average power and some room to gain more. He’s played a little outfield and should be able to handle a corner, but the Owls continue to play him mostly at first base, which isn’t helping his cause in the draft.

Nolan Schanuel
Florida Atlantic
Versatile, powerful, and productive are the best ways to describe Nolan Schanuel after a stellar freshman season at FAU. The big lefty made a big impact, hitting for both power and average while manning both corner spots in the infield and a cameo here and there in the outfield. Schanuel is actually a fringe-average runner, so the straight-line speed can handle a corner outfield role at the next level. The bat is going to be strong enough to play no matter where he settles on the defensive spectrum.

Nolan Schanuel will start in right, Spencer Rich will patrol center and Mitchell Hartigan and Dylan Goldstein will split left field and DH duties.
Schanuel is FAU’s best all-around player. He led FAU in batting average (.369) and OPS (1.135). He hit .387 against Conference USA opponents last season, ranking second in the league; and he stole 11 bases in 12 attempts.

35. Nolan Schanuel, 1B/OF, Florida Atlantic – Shanuel is a pure hitter who can absolutely drive the ball but mainly to the pull side. His hips are aggressive and really fire with authority at the plate, allowing him to turn on the best fastball, but it also leads to him getting out in front of the breaking ball, especially when facing a left handed pitcher. While he has seen some limited action at third base as a right handed throwing lefty bat, he is most likely to end up at 1B long term where his bat should play just fine.

Nolan Schanuel is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound left-handed hitting infielder/outfielder known for his advanced offensive toolset. He has an exceptional approach at the plate with a notable feel for the strike zone.
Mechanically, he uses a slightly unusual setup and a leg kick as a timing mechanism. Schanuel consistently barrels up the baseball, makes hard contact, and hits for average
Defensively, Schanuel has almost exclusively played first base in his first two years at FAU. Playing first base has been an adjustment for Schanuel, who was an outfielder in high school.
Schanuel’s versatility will benefit him moving forward. He has the skill set to handle a corner outfield spot due to his solid athleticism and average speed. He likely will play in the outfield this spring.

It's likely Nolan Schanuel is the best baseball player you've never heard of. The FAU slugger has been a mainstay on leaderboards for years now. Schanuel may have the best approach in the country with big juice. A premier name for the 2023 Draft.

Schanuel was one of my favorite players this summer. Consistently hit the ball hard and turned in great PAs. Expecting big things from him this summer
