Future Prospect - B-Mets Matt Rudick

Future Prospect - B-Mets Matt Rudick

We move on to one of Tom’s favorites, Binghamton outfielder Matt Rudick.

The 24-year old left hand hitting Rudick was drafted by the Mets in the 13th round of the 2021 draft, out of San Diego State University (4-yrs, .341-BA). He plays all three outfield positions.

He didn’t waste any time, hitting .303 in 76-AB for the FCL Mets in the same teat he was drafted. 2022 brought playing for four teams (FCL, St. Lucie, Brooklyn, Syracuse), where he went a combined .236 in 318 at-bats.

This season, he has so far played exclusively for the B-Mets, where he has impressed. So far, through 5-6, his Eastern League stat line is:

59-AB, 2-HR, 11-RBI, .305 (team leading/,468 (team leading)/.492 (team leading)/.958 (team leading).

Me?

Going forward, his below average speed will pretty much limit him to left field, which eliminates the role of utility outfielder. Add that the lack of power to become a starter, and his road to the majors could be bumpy.

  1. But he is a Met. He’s in the organization. He’s not a guy we need to draft.

  2. Matt over minder is what I say. He should get out of hitless Binghamton and up to AAA. Demote Khalil Lee.
Is Rudick that slow? 27 of 33 steals and 7 triples in 131 minor league games.

    1. Triples are created by where you hit balls

Steal speed much different from outfield speed

  3. Looks like a legitimate 4th OF. Time to let Lee go and take Bundy with him.

  4. Mack, I think speed has two components.,.raw speed, and quickness of first few steps. Willie Davis had great raw speed, but slow first step. Rudick’s 27 steals tells me he gets to max acceleration quickly, so my guess is that would allow Rudick to be an adequate back up CF and fine for LF and RF. Time will tell if his bat holds up.
