The Daily Mets Minor League Update - June 23rd

Morning.

In General:

                    Mack - Jonah Tong

A “little birdie” told me that Jonah Tong was working yesterday on the backfields, “hitting 96”.

Tong is 20-yesr old, 6-1 RHSP that the Mets drafted in the 7t round of the 2022 draft,  out of Bill Crothers SS, in Ontario, Canada.

He did pitch a little last year for Frederick Keys, in the Draft League, where he went 4-G, 3-ST, 0-1, 10.80, 11.2-IP, 14-K, 10-BB.

Tranactions:

RHP Tylor Megill was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

RHP Vinny Nittoli has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse

Mets traded 3B Eduardo Escobar to the LA Angels

The LA Angels have traded RHSP Coleman Crow to Mets  -

Crow is a 22-year old RHSP, that stands 6-0, 175. He was drafted Angels in the 28th round (over slot bonus baby) of the 2019 draft, out of Pike County HS (GA).

Crow has only pitched in parts of three pro seasons. He ended his high school year in civies, then sat out the 2020 COVID year. 2021 brought 13-games, 10-starts for the LAA A level team (4.19), followed in 2022 with 24-G, 23-ST for their AA team (4.85).

He was repeating AA this season before the trade and was pitching remarkably: 4-starts, 2-0, 1.88, 0.63, 24-IP, 31-K.

The LA Angels have traded RHSP Landon Marceaux to Mets -

Marceaux is a 23-year old, 6-0 200 RHSP that was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2021 draft by the Angels (I had him as the 17th top RHP in that draft), out of the powerful LSU Tigers SEC team.

He has pitched part of three pro seasons. It started in 2021 for their rookie team (2-starts, 0-1, 14.73). He lost the rest of his season to injuries.

2022 brought first, a stint at A+ ball (16-starts, 4-5, 2.65), then AA (2-starts, 0-1, 7.94). He actually was injured in his first AA start and shut down after two.

This season, once again at the AA level he was 12-starts, 3-6, 4.88 before the trade.

Mack - In my opinion, this is good news in multiple ways.

1. Escobar represented no help in 2024 and he was totally expendable for the remainder of this season. This move pretty much means that Brett Baty is the full time third baseman, with Luis Guillorme and Mark Vientos being his backup.

2. In my opinion, Crow is a “blue” prospect the minute he puts on a B-Met jersey. Has had an injury free career until being shut down this season since April, but he has since come back with his fourth strong outing this season. Nother spectacular here, but he mixes his top-94 heater with a + slider and two more pitches. He then masterfully mixes them all rather than overpowering you. Control freak.

3. Both these guys will immediately be slotted into the B-Mets rotation, creating movement probably out (Alex Valverde, Sammy Tavares) and possibly up (Christian Scott).

Player Of The Day -

The pre-season projected top pitching prospect, Blade Tidwell, seems to be finally settling in at Brooklyn. Last night, he went 6-IP, ER, 9-K, and lowered his seasonal ERA to 3.83.

Syracuse:

Bipolar Mets Disorder -  (@MetsDisorder)

Dominic Hamel is your 2027 Cy Young winner

SS Danny Mendick - 2-4, R, HR (8), .264, .757-OPS

DH Mark Vientos - 2-5, R, double (13), .228, 1.115-OPS

LF Carlos Cortes -3-4, R, 2-doubles (14), .253, .757-OPS

BMets -

Doug (@FTLO_Baseball)  -

I don't see how Mike Vasil's fastball is going to play long-term. Maybe he can pitch backwards a lot and be an okay 5th SP type, but from this slot/rel.HT, you either need huge IVB or a SSW sinker, and I don’t think Vasil has those.

Game 1 -

SS Wyatt Young - 2-4, R

C Matt O’Neill - 2-4, double (6)

RHRP William Woods - 2--IP, 0-R, 3-K, 3.60

Game 2 -

RF Agustin Ruiz - 2-3, double (6)

SS Branden Fryman - 2-2, double (3)

RHSP David Griiffin - 5-IP, 0-R, 6-K

Cyclones:

Daniel Broderick (@danb11)  -

Mets have drafted few college relievers and converted to starting-Tyler Stuart, Christian Scott-who are seeing some success.  Drafting arms good enough for top colllege programs but without the wear and tear sounds like a decent strategy to me, right?

Going into the game…

C Kevin Parada was not distracted by the fireworks crushing a triple for Brooklyn. Parada is slashing

.259/.344/.409 with 5 HR and 23 RBI in 57 GP.

CF Alex Ramirez - 2-4, 2-R, .-711-OPS

C Kevin Parada - 3-4, 2-R, 2-HR (7), 3-RBI, .268, .790

3B William Lugo - 3-3, R, HR (6)

RHRP Paul Gervase - 2-IP, 0-R, 3-K, 1.17

  1. Hey Tom

    Are we counting crows now?

  2. What's the minimum time an optioned player must wait before being recalled (except to replaced an injured ML player)?

    When is Vientos eligible?

  3. I am not sure but Vientos is eligible now

  4. Trade away a Crow, then trade for a Crow. Hopefully one we’ll crow about.

Maybe they will recall Vientos once they trade Guillorme or Vogelbach or Pham - or all 3.
