The Daily Mets Minor League Update - July 21st

Morning.

Mets News -

MetsAvenue (@MetsAvenue)

Francisco Alvarez has 19 HR and 40 RBI this season, slashing .381/.447/.881 in July alone. He didn’t even start the season up here in Queens

He’s a stud

CLICK HERE -Mets’ Pete Alonso takes accountability for deep slump: ‘When it’s bad, it’s bad’ -

On the surface, there is a possible explanation for Alonso’s weeks-long swoon: the 96 mph fastball from Charlie Morton that hit Alonso on the left wrist, sending him to the injured list for the second time in his career.

While Alonso’s approach hasn’t been altered significantly — his chase rate has gone up a smidge (30 percent to just over 31 percent) — his quality of contact has fallen considerably. His hard-hit rate is down a quarter (from better than 36 percent to 27 percent), his number of barrels is down big-time (from 17 percent of balls in play to under seven) and his average exit velocity has dipped (from just under 90 to right at 86 mph).

Trading Period Stuff

Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN)

Other teams have asked the Mets about the availability of Mark Canha, and a possible match might be with the Seattle Mariners. Seattle very familiar with Canha from his years in the AL West, and they pursued him in free agency two winters ago.

                                    Christopher Soto (@SotoC803)

Also a reminder that the Mets cannot send cash considerations to cover "non-guaranteed" years.

So they can cover Canha's remaining 2023 salary (~$3.6M) and the $2.0M buyout....but not the $11.5M option

Sources: The Angels are not close to a decision on whether to trade Shohei Ohtani. They’re likely to wait until the final 24-48 hours before the Aug. 1 deadline. Teams continue to contact the Angels and express interest in Ohtani, because why wouldn’t they?

Mets History:

Robert Dolan (@MetQuartet1)

Happy Heavenly Birthday to former NY Mets Chairman Of The Board NELSON DOUBLEDAY, born in this day in 1933.  Nelson joined the Mets in 1980 as part of the new ownership, and within six years saw the team go from “worst…to FIRST!!” and a World Series Championship!!

Baseball In General:

Howard Kellman (@HowardKellman)

Happy 85th Birthday to Hall of Famer Tony Oliva! He's the only man to win batting titles his first two years in @MLB 1964 & 1965 with @Twins He could "stay back" on off speed stuff & he was a terrific hitter!

Citi Field (Mets)

The Mets are moving a portion of the right-field wall at Citi Field in. According to the New York Post, that portion of the field is moving in approximately 8 feet 6 inches to the right of the 370-foot sign in right center. So, maybe, left-handed hitters at Citi Field will pop a few more dingers. Yet, gamers probably shouldn't expect massive changes.

  1. Luis Moreno rising.

It was selfish of Iron Man Pete to rush back instead of another week of repair. I hate it when guys rush back to play hurt and either get RE injured or greatly struggle. Vientos got sent down when Pete rushed back. No sense.

  2. Good Morning,

How did the Mets lose Alan Winans to Atlanta? He had an Era less than 2 as a reliever when he was stolen by Atlanta. Then they make him into a Starter who had less than a 3.00 at AAA and now they have called him up to the majors.

Someone really messed up with this person.
Let’s hope we can be better in the future.
