Tom Brennan - From The “What If?” Department

WHAT IF THEY HADN'T TRADED THIS FELLA?

SUCCESS-STARVED METS FANS ALWAYS WONDER “WHAT IF?”

The Mets won 101 games last year, but did not RE-sign two key starters, Taijuan Walker and Chris Bassitt.

This year, the former is 15-5, the latter 14-8, going into Friday night.

That is 29-13.

“What If?” the Mets had kept them?

You gotta wonder.

LAST NITE:

Tylor Megill was very good until the 6th, where he allowed a 3 run shot to Realmuto for all his runs allowed. Got the pitch up…and so did J.T.

36 runs allowed in 47 IP from 4th thru 6th innings this year. Not good.

Brett Baty tied the game in the 9th with a 110 MPH 440 foot rocket to CF off Craig Kimbrel, his 9th, but Pete fanned with the bags jammed, and then Ottavino fell to 1-6 when he lost it in the 10th, with the automatic runner on 3nd scoring.

Cross town, Judge hit 3 HRs and 6 RBIs…all rise.

And Mark Canha had a 2 run double in Milwaukee’s 2nd inning against the Marlenes.

Mark is an All Star caliber .306/.389/.465 for the Brewers in 44 games, after his mediocre .245/.343/.381 in 89 games….naturally.

“WHAT IF” he wasn’t traded?

Finally:

Game 1 of Binghamton’ best of 3 championship series tonight, weather permitting. Tidwell scheduled to go.

And the Syracuse Mets won 4-3 on a walk off walk to Brandon McIlwain, his 4th walk of the night. Wyatt Young had 3 hits as his season-long slump ended in Sept.

Doing well also since late season promos to Syracuse are Jose Peroza (.346, with 9 RBIs in 7 games)) and Jaylen Palmer (.237).

Eric Orze Alert:

Eric won with 2 hitless innings, 3 Ks.

He may not be on yours yet, but he is on the Mets’ 2024 bullpen radar.

Why? Starting with his last August relief outing, he has done THIS:

11 innings, 2 hits, no runs, TWENTY TWO STRIKEOUTS.

WOW WOW WOW.

  2. What if Diaz didn't jump up and down celebrating a spring training WBC victory?

  3. TP, if Diaz stayed healthy and lethal, then we are 1) in the Wild Card and 2) not on a dismantled team.

  4. Last year, the Mets outperformed all their matrices. The Padres showed us that and the reality of it continued this year. It’s time to recognize the team needs a real bullpen, at least one big bat, and a couple of starting pitchers. Let’s not kid ourselves, this team has plenty of opportunity to improve.

  5. 75 win teams,it’s easy to improve. Not so easy to make the Playoffs.

  6. Yes and when you look at what got us here so many things lead to the Aug 1 sell off and it will be interesting how the additions work out next year and the fate of Pete as he looks like he's struggling with the pressure of his impending free agency. He's come up small in alot of big spots recently and I don't agree with the theory of letting him play out next year and then we deal with his contract as I see him not responding well to a "show me what you can do" year.

  7. Alonso needs a good bat behind him. Him and Lindor need another hitter or two besides Nimmo in the order. There is a reason that this team scores 3 or less runs so often. Alonso and Lindor need help.
