Mack - Current Thoughts

 Hi.

Yes, I am still retired but, as you know, I have stayed active comments wise.

First, an update in me. My body is pretty broken now and I spend most of my time in my lounger, but my mind is sharp and my family health hiccups have settled down.

I stopped watching the Mets in June but stayed close to the team through posts either here, on X (what a stupid name), or The Athletic.

The Mets have a lot to get done before opening day. A new General Manager. A new Manager. A coaching staff. A new head of scouting. A new head of development.  Free agency.

I assume Steve Cohen and David Stearns are working overtime on the top floor positions. I hope Craig Counsell and the Mets can come to terms post haste.

I don't happen to think a new General Manager should be on the burner ahead of a new direction in both scouting and player development. There is something lacking in the Mets system. Is it the players they scout? Is it the players they draft? Is it how they are developed level to level? Or is all three?

I have questions.

If Lindor is signed until the next century, why are all these SS prospects not playing other positions?

Why did it take so long to play Mauricio on second?

What was their plan for playing Vientos?

And exactly who did make out the lineups each game?

And what about pitching?  What is this new pitch count system all about? How come your stretched out starters wind up pitching one or two innings?

It just doesn't seem all about yearly innings limits.

The amount of upper level management turnover in the past four year is far past the embarrassment stage. They truly look like the Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight.

I understand this game. I have worked with people at all levels. I especially know the strong relationships players have with their agents. Players turn their entire financial future to these agents whose sole purpose is to create a contract where they can get the largest slice from.

They don't care if their client plays the rest of their career for a team in New York or Beirut.

It's the money, honey.

Players get input and, trust me, they don't want to sign a long term deal with a team only to have all the people they dealt with at the time of the signing be replaced in the first three years of their deal.

Your name is Ohtani.  You were signed and brought to America by a certain General Manager. Your free agency is approaching and that man is now on another team that drools over the chance of contracting you for your service.

You go to bed and wake up to find that man gone, only to be replaced with someone you have no relationship with.

Add this to the fact you might be playing second or third fiddle to other players from your home country, a place where traditions like this are super important.

Come on.

I haven't even written here about player needs but the writers here do so every day.

I'm an ex-top management guy. You just can't keep feeding new players to a bad system.

They'll stop signing.

I want you all to understand how adamant I am about this team targeting to 2024.

They must give the Baby Mets another full season to see how many of them are for real.

And they must let the Binghamton Class of 2023 develop in Syracuse and possibly hit Queens in late 2024.

They must build a future team around these prospects.

They must.

  1. Wise words from Mack. "Build" was the wisest. We have to be done with "Buy". Every success story in baseball is about the franchise that built a team, or built a system, not the old Steinbrenner purchase of a fantasy team.

    1. I wouldn't mind a couple additions like Yamamoto but why would a team draft all this talent, develop them, and then not even play them to see what they got?

  2. Legitimate questions. 2024 should provide lots of answers.

  3. Exactly,Mr Mack.. And I think they’re good prospects too. But spending Cohens money is good to.. Just pick the right guys.

  4. Mack spot on as usual and yes we must move on from the Mets "error" which has gone on way to long now and covers 2 ownerships and proven money alone is not the answer but a solid FO is as well as picking of course the right players. Mr. Sterns has a huge job ahead of him and the loss of Eppy has to hurt our chances of signing Ohtani and Yamamoto as the timing of it couldn't have been worse and just wonder if it wasn't just about DS wanting full power and us wondering was that the way to go as only time will tell. I wonder if Ohtani signs elsewhere if that Garcia fella would fit as DH/RF with Marte in question or they can split the 2 positions and what he'll want money wise. Also is Bellinger a possibility? Sterns seems to be putting off the Alsonso decision which I don't get because him hitting FA and then trying to sign him is a bad strategy in my opinion.

    1. My guess is Boras will handle Pete the same way he does with all his clients.

      No discussion during the season

      Test free agency

    2. I prefer that. For one thing, we get to see if his BA rebounds or continues to drop. For another, it keeps the payroll down so we have room for FAs before the Max/JV contracts are up.

Whether we extend him now or next fall, we still have to outbid the market. Better to wait and re-evaluate. And if it's Boras' decision to wait before signing, he can't be resentful of the Mets for doing it that way.

      Win/win.

  5. The Cubs are looking into Soto. Looks like they may want a big bat… I think they have toys the Mets would like, especially Ferris and maybe Horton…

    1. My guess is the spending wheel will stop pending a final resolution to whether or not Moto will sign on.

    2. Also interesting is fact that Yamamoto is blowing up so far in their version of the World Series

    3. OUCH! Worse that post-season Max!

  6. It is truly the New York Mess, and you highlight that well, Mack.

My brother again cited the Mets' inability to develop prospects to come up with the next Soto or A Rod. He's not wrong.

Why isn't Mauricio, on his own, a more accomplished fielder? Why didn't Vientos do better in his extended trial? What was wrong with Baty? None are Sotos or Corbin Carrolls.

Lots to fix around here. We don't need movement from Stearns; we need IMPROVEMENT. Lots of it. Enduring improvement.

My brother says the Mets should go totally bold, get Soto first, then Ohtani, and Yamamoto and Nola and some pen arms. It might mean a $500 million payroll for a few years, but it is only Cohen Cash, and we need to get lots better. And avoid Ruf mistakes.

Or - as Mack says - get younger and work the process. In theory, the better way to go, Mack. But wouldn't you like to see a World Series win in 2024? Why wait?

    1. Prospects are tricky

I remember the Mets signed a third baseman out of the Dominican in 2011

Baa said he was top slugger in his class

I wrote what a great sign it was.

      The player?

      Elvis Sanchez

    2. Tom

      I don't care about a WS in 2024

I care about doing this process correctly for the long run

Aren't you tired of writing why this team has failed year after year due to old man injuries?

  7. Mack, I hate old man injuries. But Soto and Ohtani the hitter are beasts and aren’t old - but we are.

We may not live long enough to see the purist approach succeed in 2030.

  8. If anyone has nothing to do tonight, I take off my writer’s hat and put on my Christian singing hat tonight at a church fundraiser in East Northport. I am being confined to a half hour - their mistake. Yes, I can sing. All are semi-originals. Unlike some players we know, I may be turning 70, but don’t let that fool you - I still pack serious (singing) heat. 6 PM…$20…they feed you. 782 Larkfield Road, East Northport. Doing another date on my actual birthday on Nov 4th in Port Jefferson. No food.

  9. I have heard of "swinging for the fences", but now Tom is "singing for the fences". The Mets will move the fences in at Citi Field one foot for every 1000 that attend Tom's concert. Let's get behind it!

  10. Thanks, Paul. Based on that, the fences may move in a few centimeters!

  11. The Mets need to go in steps.

Sign Yamamoto as he would improve the rotation now and in the future.
Fix the BP. Bring Robertson back.
Play Vientos as the DH / 1B when Alonso needs to rest.
    Play Mauricio at 2B everyday.
Play Baty at 3B until he either proves he can or cannot do it.
I'm with Mack, stop drafting shortstops.

I think you fix the BP, improve the rotation and the Mets are a least WC contender.

  12. Not too excited about Vientos. How far do you go with Baty,50, 100 at bats? Mauricio I believe in but he not a sure thing either. Our Baby Mets didn’t do much this season.
